Burn Your Plastic Jesus

Burn Your Plastic Jesus saw 10,000 peeps on Wednesday night at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. Mark Driscoll spent a big chunk of time doing the smack down on 7 false views on Jesus, and then showed from the Bible the Real Jesus.

There was a great buzz around the gathering and MD rocked the suburbs better than Michael Jackson! I thought there were a tad too many hymns and the music was a bit 90s. Almost every word that MD has said in the last few years is available in mp3 and high def video for free at the Mars Hill Church website, yet KCC continue to charge money for sermons!

Here’s an outline and video from the talk:

7 False (Plastic) Views of Jesus:

  1. Religious Jesus
  2. Bling Jesus
  3. Moral Jesus
  4. Aussie Jesus
  5. Country Jesus
  6. Spiritual Jesus
  7. Pensioner Card Jesus

Who Jesus says Jesus is…

  1. Jesus said he came down from heaven (John 6)
  2. Jesus performed miracles
  3. Jesus said he was God (Mark 14:61-64 + John 10:30-35)
  4. Jesus said he was without sin (John 8:46)
  5. Jesus forgave sin (Mark 2)
  6. Jesus is the way, truth and life and no-one comes to the Father but through him (John 14:6)

Here’s a few reports: Craig Schwarze, Russell Powell, Sydney Anglican Forums. 5-minute video from Burn Your Plastic Jesus (from here):

The above video includes his dig at Central Coast stoners!

In KCC’s defence, as far as I understand, their opperating costs depend on the money which is made from sales of CD’s/MP3’s. Unlike churches, KCC get only a handful of opportunities each year to ask for money to help fund the ministry (basically at each convention and that’s it). From my point of view I’m very happy to pay for their CD’s/MP3’s if it means the ministry can keep operating because it’s been a great blessing to me (and plenty of others too!).

yeah good call. i’m aware of that… so i held back from a full slam of it… i wrote it more because of the irony.

  3. al says:

You’re right about the irony of it! And to be perfectly honest I’d love it if they were free to download cause the quality of KCC stuff is up there. Just thinking…perhaps it’s something they should think about raising money specifically for so all their talks could be available for free download…

i bought a kcc sermon last night. it was $2.
why not put the price of BYPJ to $30 instead of $28 - and put $2 from each ticket towards online audio distribution?

i don’t have a problem with them charging for CD’s and DVDs. there are costs for packaging etc that means that a price is necessary.

also - have a visible button for online donations that people can freely use. and clear statements about the way the ministry is funded…

it might mean that there would be people internationally benefit from the audio ministry and give money towards it… an opportunity to receive money each day from generous Christians and not just during convention time.

    Hi Dave,

I was at the event at loved it! Typical Driscoll in all his driscollonian glory! Funny, relevant, accurate and down right powerful.

As the webmaster of a small church plant, http://www.citywestchurch.com.au where we stream all our sermons for free, I totally agree on your take on KCC charging for the MP3 download.

We’ve got like 70 people in our church and if we can afford to stream, anyone can! We pay $6.95 a month for our server and that gives us 3,000 GB’s of bandwidth.

I’m sure KCC could do better - especially in the light that Mars Hill gives all it’s content for free!

Anyway apart from that, great post on a great night!

  6. CJ says:

I was there too. Great night!

10,000 people x $28 = enough money to put the talks online for free.

[...] In the last couple of weeks I’ve spoken to so many people who are fired-up for living for Jesus and being on mission with Jesus. There is a infectious vibe amongst young guys who are keen to plant churches and grow up for the sake of Jesus and the gospel. For that I’m thankful to God for the way that he has used his servant Mark Driscoll in encouraging Australians in this regard.
