10.27How would you spend $20 on iTunes?
I have a $20 iTunes voucher, and I never know how to spend them. Got some tips? What would you buy? What should I buy? I’m willing to be adventurous…

The pic is from a butchery converted into a cafe in Mittagong Mudgee…

if you don’t have it already, I’d get some Cake … fashion nugget or comfort eagle … or failing that get yourself an 80s best of.

playlist for Fashion Nugget: I reckon that this is one of those ‘listen happily to every track’ albums (although sad songs and waltzes gets on my nerves a bit after a while). Only down side is that it doesn’t include short skirt/long jacket … but you should have $1.69 to spare
1. “Frank Sinatra” – 4:01
2. “The Distance” – 3:00
3. “Friend is a Four Letter Word” – 3:22
4. “Open Book” – 3:44
5. “Daria” – 3:44
6. “Race Car Ya-Yas” – 1:21
7. “I Will Survive” (Freddie Perren and Dino Fekaris) – 5:10
8. “Stickshifts and Safetybelts” – 2:09
9. “Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps” (Joe Davis) – 2:24
10. “It’s Coming Down” – 3:44
11. “Nugget” – 3:58
12. “She’ll Come Back to Me” – 2:24
13. “Italian Leather Sofa” – 5:52
14. “Sad Songs and Waltzes” (Willie Nelson) – 3:15

I tend to use itunes to get random songs that I like (that I may have heard on the radio for example, or hits from my teenage years) but would never want to buy the complete album. I like actually owning a physical CD, so if I want a complete album I dont use itunes, even if it is a few dollars cheaper…
Also, if you have an ipod touch or an iphone you could use your voucher to purchase apps for it. There are some pretty good ones out there for only a few dollars too.

hey matt.
good idea… i’ve done that a bit before - but $20 is a lot of random songs!!! give me some suggestions!!!!!
i don’t have a touch or phone - but thanks for the tip.

Not sure if you’d go for my music suggestions, something tells me you’re not that into pop
But, you can buy TV shows now days - I saw them advertising scrubs season 7 for about $3 an episode - not sure if that’s a good deal or not?

not into scrubs.
but - would be keen to hear your tips on pop…

$20 is a lot of random songs, but you don’t have to spend it all at once. You could keep it for when a new song comes on the radio that you like.
Suggestions… Well, I bought matchbox 20’s greatest hits late last year, and it has been a regular on my ipod ever since. They had some classics back in the 90s.
Rage Against the Machine had some unbelievably awesome songs, which you could pick and choose a few from their different albums. Obviously the lyrics can be a tad obscene at times, but seeing as they don’t sing about sex and money I don’t thing they are any worse than a lot of modern pop artists.
But think about all the songs you used to sing along to while cramming for exams and that will point you in the right direction…

Talking about Cake… while Fashion Nugget is their best, don’t underestimate their less well known earlier album Motorcade of Genorosity. In some ways I prefer it. Joelene, Rock and Roll Lifestyle, Jesus Wrote a Blank Check are all classic songs. Remember seeing them live at the Coogee Bay Hotel in 97.
October 29th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
hey matt.
thanks for the tips… Rage are a very good option.
AS far as cramming for exams - in school i used to listen to classical music.now i listen to jazz… i can’t have words otherwise i sing along.
joel a. thanks.
will check out their earlier album. were they good live?
October 29th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
I totally hear where you’re coming from with the words thing. In school I also listened to lyric-less music when studying as the lyrics would interfere with what I was writing (sometimes I accidentally wrote down lyrics in my study notes). The exception was maths study which was fine, unless I suppose if the artist was singing about numbers
Through uni a lot of my study was numbers based, so again lyrics were not an issue.

I thought they were brilliant live, but it was the wrong venue for them. They would have done much better in a smaller, more intimate setting. I don’t think Selena’s brought out the best in them and they were noticably agitated by the crowd. The mate I saw them with later saw them in the US in a smaller venue and said they were 100% better.

Talking about the whole music and studying thing, I have been digging Sigur Ros lately, has words, but hard to sing them cause they in Icelandic and his vocal register is way out of my range.
If you were looking for an album of theirs I would suggest Takk, but their latest one (Með Suð Í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust) is cool too.

joel - thanks for the review. love your blog posts… keep them rolling!
duke - will check out that album in a crazy language!!!

How did you go with FisherKing? I have the privilege of living next-door to their rehearsal space, and I’ve never complained about the noise (even though Josh & Sam are always wary of waking up my kids). Haven’t heard the EP itself yet…
December 20th, 2008 at 12:05 am
hey dave - really digging their EP - it’s gold.
how often do the sweet tunes waft into your house??
