Saturday night adventures in Newtown

Last night we went out for dinner in Newtown. It was a good night, but Dan’s computer was nicked from our car. No worries about the car, bummer about the mac.

Love more than one

Here’s an ad from a jeans store window. It reminded me of a certain rugby league scandal. Which came first: rugby league players engaging in group sex? Group sex being used to sell products? Or group sex by ‘consenting’ adults being generally accepted?

Tedashii – Identity Crisis

Confession time. I like R&B and Rap music. Yep. Boyz II Men. Tupac. Sometimes I say to people that I used to like it during high school, but the truth is, I still like it! I like the beats, the harmonies, the poetry and the jive talk. BUT I came to the point where I couldn’t listen to too much Rap music because it wasn’t the best stuff to be filling my head with. I also realised that singing along to ‘I’ll make love to you’ wasn’t the most edifying gear for me to be singing as a single Christian dude.

Tedashii | Identity Crisis

This week I’ve been listening to a rap album that’s really good AND a lot more edifying for my ears and my soul. TedashiiIdentity Crisis. The album comes out on Tuesday (American Time). Tedashii is a Christian rapper (homies with Lecrae and the Reach Records crew). Here’s the thing. Christian Rap is often C-Rap. But for Tedashii, it’s actually good. Well produced. Not lame. He’s got cred. Creative lyrics. Good beats. Great R&B loops. Sweet R&B singers. Encouraging. (I often use the word encouraging, but I’ve been really encouraged by this album!)

So much of African-American hip-hop culture is about identity. Cars. Cash. Bling. Women. Alcohol. Status. Ripped abs. Gangs. Violence. Identity Crisis is brilliant in the way it re-thinks the idea of identity for the Christian. The identity theme flows throughout the album. Created in the image of God. Fallen. Adopted. Now part of a community. The album has a clear picture of the gospel of Jesus’ death and resurrection and the new identity that belongs to those that believe in Him.

Two of my fav tracks: Hollywood which is Tedashii’s testimony; and Make War which kicks off with a snippet of a John Piper sermon about making war against sin in your life.

This album is the goods. If you’re a young Christian dude into rap – check this gear out – it’s good and will encourage you. If you’re a parent or youth leader who’s got young crew into rap, buy them the album to help them think about their identity.

Susan Boyle – Semi Final 1 – Britain’s Got Talent 2009

Susan Boyle keeps rocking the suburbs on Britain’s Got Talent. I’ll give every reader of this blog a warm fuzzy if she DOESN’T win the final! Singing ‘Memories’ in this vid.

Rice Regenerate Praise – Surrender

Rice Regenerate Praise – Surrender happened last weekend, and it was the goods! Trev Hodge and Deb Fung (and their respective bands) were thoughtful and passionate in the way they led us through stacks of singing. Pete Ko gave a great short talk on ‘Surrender’. Steve Chong led the night well and continues to make saying creeds cool!

Rice Regenerate Praise

Throughout the night a number of people got up between songs that had a word of encouragement from the scriptures to share. This was cool. I helped out with some counselling at the end of the night. It was encouraging chatting to one Christian guy about some areas of his life he needs to surrender to Jesus. I spoke to another guy who isn’t yet a Christian, but I believe he’s close to the Kingdom. It was encouraging to hear of his friend who invited him to start investigating the claims of Jesus about 8 weeks ago.

Go check out a couple of videos at the Rice Regenerate website.

Diploma of Biblical Studies

Rowena recently finished her Diploma of Biblical Studies through Moore College and will graduate in a week. She’s found the course extremely useful in life and ministry. The email she sent around to her family is below. It’s encouraging. (Used with permission!)

Diploma of Biblical Studies

Hey Hey, after like 8 and a half years (with a few breaks in-between) I have finally completed my Diploma of Biblical Studies. I’m very happy to have been able to undertake this study. In looking back over the courses I am amazed at the broad ranging biblical ideas I’ve been able to engage with as part of the program. Through the course I have touched on every book of the bible along with a range of church history, apologetics and Christian worship subjects. Through my studies I have been able to deepen my understanding of the scriptures and have grown in my appreciation of God’s purposefulness in his interaction with the world as revealed in biblical history culminating in the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus. Thanks for your interest over the years in my studies shown through the various conversations we have had and in Dave’s case patience in me attending classes etc. In Rach’s case thanks in particular thanks for being a keen study partner and fellow learner. Rach now you have to finish!!!!

Well not sure what I’m going to do with myself now that this slab of study is over with? Maybe I’ll be able to come up with something later in June!!!

Keep reading your bibles and taking the opportunity to learn of God’s goodness to us as revealed in the scriptures, I encourage you to find both formal (eg courses and programs) and informal opportunities (daily quiet times) to do this.

Love Row

Very cool.

Rugby League

I like soccer. But Rugby League is okay. Tonight I watched my first League game for a while. The Bulldogs (the team I go for) were denied a last-ditch win by a stupid decision by the video ref to the Dragons. Ah well… still a great game! As exciting as the game was, the news this week in the Rugby League world that will be remembered will be about 4 Corners, Matt Johns, “Claire” from Christchurch, half the Cronulla Sharks team and the ‘consensual’ sex romp they had in 2002. Most of the Australian bloggers I read have commented on it. Below is a snippet from Phillip Jensen on “League Hypocrisy”. It’s brilliant. Go read the whole thing in full.

This dude from the Bulldogs, Jamal Idris, was awesome!

“There used to be a saying that consenting adults can do whatever they like with and to each other. That is, until the problem of the rugby league players in Christchurch was aired on the Four Corners Show. The ethic of consent taught by the league’s ethical feminists does not understand the nature of human corruption. Under the right social pressure people will consent to all manner of harmful and damaging behaviour. [...]

Some of the leaders of the code are saying that group sex, even when consensual, is wrong. Good on them. But the code’s ethics lecturer is saying anything is permissible provided it is with consent. She seems to have no problem with pornography – as if that industry is going to teach young men to “respect” women! [...]

Men need to do better than respect women, or gain consent to use them or even accept their offers to be used. Men need to be taught the meaning of genuine love and the conquest of love over lust. For love does not use the other person but seeks what is in the other person’s best interest. If we want footballers to be role models of morality, a questionable confusion of categories caused by our media celebrity hype, they need to be shown how to enjoy a real and loving relationship of marriage and family life.”

Go read the whole thing in full. Seriously.

Rejoice in the Global Financial Crisis

Check out the way the early Christians (written to in Hebrews) responded in the face of a financial crisis: “32Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering. 33Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. 34You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.” (Hebrews 10:32-34)

If you’re a Christian, your perspective in life is larger than the person who doesn’t follow Jesus. That’s why the Hebrew Christians were able to rejoice in their suffering – they knew they had a better and lasting possession in Jesus. I think that Christians likewise today are better placed to deal with financial catastrophes. Our hope isn’t in gold, silver, stocks, bonds, property or any stuff here and now – our hope is in the inheritance made secure through the resurrection of Jesus.

Church History on iTunes U

iTunes U is gold! It’s a stack of tertiary institutions around the world that share their lectures and resources online through iTunes. (I’ve linked to it before: here and here).

church history on iTunes U

We’ve got a Church History essay due next Tuesday. Over the last few days, I’ve listened to a couple of relevant lectures that have been helpful for setting the context. They are from Covenant Theological Seminary: Reformation and Modern Church History. Reformed Theological Seminary also have a stack of lectures online.

This might be helpful for others doing the same essay. Not doing the essay? Open iTunes (download here), go into the iTunes Store, and there’s an iTunes U button in the top left corner – lots of treasures to be found!
