Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead

“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:12-14)

Farewell 2009. Bring on 2010!!! Have a killer new year “pressing on toward the goal…”

Best of 2009 – Top 5 iPhone Apps

Best of 2009 round 1:  Albums. Round 2: iPhone Apps. I’ve had an iPhone for about 4 months. It really has been a handy productivity tool, and it also makes phone calls! The following are Applications that I use most days.

  1. Trip View Lite - super smart and super useful train (and bus + ferry) timetable. The paid version enables you to save your favourite trips. Triperrific.
  2. Dictionary.com - the best thing about this app is that you don’t need to be connected to the internet to use it. Also has a thesaurus. Wordelicious.
  3. Cash Trails - we enter spending into this app and then email it weekly as a spreadsheet. Good for keeping an eye on spending and budgeting. Cashtastic.
  4. Ultimate To Do - there are a billion ‘to-do’ apps. This one syncs with toodledo and follows the principles from David Allen and the GTD cult system. Just do it.
  5. ABC News + Media - good up-to-date news and other media from different ABC websites. ABC are leading the way in Oz in embracing new media. Sexy news.

Got an iPhone? What’s your #1 app??

Twilight #1 – Team Edward or Team Jacob?

Guest Blogger: Row Miers

As part of the recent “Twilight Saga” journey that I and a number of my friends have embarked on, a topic that has been hotly debated is which team we are on: Team Edward or Team Jacob? Which guy is Bella Swan best suited to?

On the one hand there’s the vampire Edward Cullen, with his smouldering good looks, super human strength, excessive wealth, intelligence, good manners and old fashioned values and his unfathomable love, commitment and protectiveness of his soul mate Bella Swan. Then there’s the alternative, the werewolf Jacob Black, with his powerful and muscular physique, selfless courage, fun-loving disposition, and his enduring patience and loyalty towards Bella.

The argument could go on. A further question that I feel is also up for discussion is, what has Team Bella got going for it? From the books it clear that she has many good qualities: she is generally thought of as being quite physically attractive; she seems to always do her homework; she keeps on top of the cooking and cleaning around the house; she’s keenly aware of caring for the needs of her mother and father and showing due respect to them; she doesn’t speed; and she’s fun and adventurous.

Entermission – debut album from DJ Official – available now!

I dig the work of Reach Records (I’ve previously reviewed Tedashii’s Identity Crisis). DJ Official released a brand new album today. It’s got some legit rappers and a killer missional message. My homeboy MC Shamrock would call this album dope. Check it.

Here’s the full press release for Entermission from Reach Records:

After producing for over 10 years and serving as travelling deejay, Official finally has the opportunity to reveal the dynamic of his skill-set on one project. The album is purposed to influence Christians to think about the Great Commission (Matt 28:19) and the Great Commandment (Luke 10:27) on a local level. As Christians we have a personal mission field, which consist of those that God has placed in our sphere of influence.

You Don’t Need To Do Miracles To Be A Saint

In the Bible, the word ‘saint’ is given to all who believe in Jesus. It’s not about what you do, it’s about having your trust in Jesus. Glenn Davies has written a great article on it.

Here’s a snippet:

Put simply, anyone whose sins have been forgiven by God, through faith in Jesus Christ, is a saint. Through God’s Holy Spirit, faith in Jesus makes us whole, indeed “holy”. It is not the achievements of a person’s life, but rather the gift of God through Christ, that makes us saints. Anyone looking at the letters of the Saint Paul can see how he writes to ordinary Christians as “saints”. It is not some rarefied title, but the humbling appellation that reminds us we belong to God and in his sight we are “holy”.

The second problem with the Roman Catholic Church’s process of canonisation is that it obscures the importance of God’s description of his people and replaces it with a human analysis of miracle working. Who can prove that the reported miracles were actually the work of Mary MacKillop? Did the persons healed pray to only Mary or did they not also pray to God? Even if they prayed to Mary MacKillop, what evidence is there that it was Mary MacKillop’s intercession that healed them? Furthermore, what evidence is there in the Bible that the departed saints (I use the term advisedly) pray for us?

Breaking News: Zoolander 2 Pre-release

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson weren’t required for the follow up to the 2001 classic comedy, Zoolander. Instead they chose to cast Drew, Mal and me in the sequel. The setting? The streets of Sydney. Here are some candid shots taken during filming:

[click for full glossy bigness]

Okay. Maybe not a Zoolander sequel. But Drew and Mal are really, really ridiculously good looking! It’s been a while since the 3 of us have hung out, so it was good to get the band back together. We had a killer night eating, drinking, walking, posing, laughing, praying, driving, encouraging, climbing, rapping, joking and reminiscing.

DMDC is raising $1541 to provide clean water for children

I’ve recently been challenged in 2 ways: 1) At EV Church, we have just completed a series on James. In James, real faith is shown in action. 2) At Willoughby Church, over Christmas, we are raising money to buy water wells in Cambodia for $1500.

can you help?

I figured that $1500 isn’t that much! Over the last couple of years, the readership of davemiers.com has steadily increased such that, with your help it is an achievable target. Let’s do it! I’m looking for 49 people to help… (DONATE NOW)

  • 1 person @ $200
  • 3 people @ $100 each
  • 10 people @ $50 each
  • 15 people @ $25 each
  • 20 people @ $10 each

Are you one of those 49 people? DONATE NOW!

This fund-raising is done in partnership with Compassion Australia.

For many children, there’s water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink! There are many diseases affecting children that could be easily prevented by providing them with access to clean water. This gift can help give the gift of life to hundreds of children by providing clean water through purification systems, rain water tanks and other water harvesting systems.

DONATE NOW. Is it too ambitious to do it by Christmas??? Help spread the word…

God Of Second Chances

Carlos Whittaker is one of my favourite bloggers/tweeters. He’s got an album coming out soon. God of Second Chances is one of his forthcoming songs. This vid shows a homeless dude, Danny, come and sing with him as he starts playing it. Kinda cool.

Don’t call me baby – part 4

Dear blog reader. My guess is that some of you probably have a cute and cuddly Christmas view of Jesus. Yes, Jesus was once a cuddly little baby. But he’s much more!

don't call me baby

Jesus is the SAVIOUR of the World; he came to save people like you. Jesus is GOD WITH US; our need for a Saviour was so great that only God could come and be that Saviour.

Stop thinking of Jesus as a baby! My hope for you this Christmas is that you’d see the real Jesus. A good place to start would be to read one of Jesus’ biographies. Start here.

LISTEN TO “DON’T CALL ME BABY” MP3

“Don’t Call Me Baby” – Sermon from Youth Carols Event

Contact me if you want to catch up and chat about Jesus further (or if you are from a far away land, I can put you in contact with someone nearby).

Don’t call me baby – part 3

Your view of Jesus will shape your response to Jesus. If Jesus was just a baby and nothing more, it would be okay to pack him away with all the decorations after Christmas is over. But he’s more than just a baby, in fact he came to save people from their sins. More than that, Jesus isn’t just a man, he is God!

don't pack me away with the decorations...

Check this “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”—which means, “God with us.” (Matthew 1:23). This sentence reveals even more to us about the identity of Jesus. He is God with us. When you meet Jesus you are actually meeting God, the creator of the universe!!

This is good news. Incredible news. God has come near. God knows our need. God has done something about it. God has become one of us, so that he can save people from their sins. When you view Jesus like this, you can’t keep treating him as a cute and cuddly Christmas Jesus.

How should we treat this SAVIOUR-GOD Baby Jesus?? Stay tuned for part 4…

Don’t call me baby – part 2

Your view of Jesus will shape your response to Jesus. Jesus isn’t your homeboy, a ninja or just a baby. Jesus is Saviour. That’s what the name Jesus means, “God saves”. In Matthew’s biography of Jesus it says: “Mary will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21). Why did Jesus come as a Saviour? Because people needed to be saved from their sins.

pic from http://www.flickr.com/photos/fotopakismo/2254730576/

The Bible and human experience make it clear that all people have sinned. Sin is when we disobey God, in effect we live as if there is no God. The presence of sin means that our greatest need is to be saved from sin and the penalty for sin.

That’s where baby Jesus steps onto the scene. The extraordinary thing about Jesus is that he is the one person in history to not sin, he always lived in obedience to his Father. And so he didn’t just come to be cute and cuddly Christmas Jesus, but he came on a unique rescue mission to save people from their sin.

He does this by dying on the cross 33 years later. When Jesus died, he took upon himself the penalty that people deserve for their sin. It’s only by trusting in Jesus as your Saviour that you can be forgiven of your sin.

When you understand that Jesus is Saviour, the best way to respond to him is recognising that you need to be saved.

Jesus is more than just a cute little baby – find out more in part 3…

Don’t call me baby – part 1

Your view of Jesus will shape your response to Jesus. If Jesus is just your homeboy (check the t-shirt); then you’ll treat him like you treat any other buddy or mate. If you view Jesus as a Cyborg Pirate Ninja (check this); then you’ll probably live in constant fear that he is going to sneak up on you and break your neck!

what ewe looking at sheep??? (pic from http://www.sxc.hu/photo/939787)

If you “like the Christmas Jesus best” (check this vid); then you’ll keep him wrapped up as a cute little baby in a manger, packed away with the Christmas decorations for the rest of the year.

Here’s the deal. Just like you and me, Jesus was once just a little baby. He cried. He crawled. He crapped. His birthday party, Christmas, is coming up soon. Two questions:

  1. Why do we celebrate the birth of a baby from 2000 years ago?
  2. What will cause you to think about Jesus more than just at Christmas?

Tiger Woods, Sexual Sin and Choosing Heroes

Tiger Woods has fallen. I have no intention of having a pot shot at him or removing my sponsorship dollars. Here are two things I’ve been reflecting on amidst the media storm:

tiger woods

  1. Sexual sin is costly. Do you travel* alone for sport, business, preaching, holidays or the like? Count the cost of sexual sin, don’t put yourself in stupid situations and establish accountable relationships. (*This applies even if you’ve never left your home town).
  2. Choose your heroes carefully. Don’t put too much hope in people. Even heroes fall. I remember as a teenager being crushed when some of my heroes were exposed for their shadiness. I’m no longer surprised when a public figure or even a personal friend is exposed. My hope is in the One Man who will never be exposed for corruption or deceit. Trust Jesus – he won’t let you down.

YMC09 Top 5 Videos

My favourite youth ministry conference is the Youthworks YMC. Unfortunately, I missed the conference this year as I was travelling back from overseas. So because I couldn’t be there in the flesh, I recorded my segment before I left, to be shown each session.

see below for the vids

See below for the videos. I haven’t actually watched them yet (currently sitting in a cafe with basic internet). I think they went down okay. If you watch only one, the one on youth group meals was the most fun. They can also be found on fervr.net
