The West Wing = Brilliant. What next?

We’ve just finished watching the 7th (and final) season of The West Wing. Such a good television series. Brilliant! I loved the script, character development, story, drama, acting and cinematography. I didn’t always love the politics. I feel smarterer from watching.

Over the past year, I’ve tweeted/facebooked that we were watching it a number of times, and it consistently generates favourable discussion and ‘likes’.

What should we consider watching next??? My guess is you won’t be able to name a better series. Give it a shot anyway – would love to hear it in the comments…

Aaron Sorking did one season of Studio 60 on Sunset Strip. It’s not as good, but still pretty fun.

Bah… didn’t love the politics. The show would have su-ukkked if it were a republican president! :) I recommend waiting three months, and then starting over with series 1.

You can’t beat West Wing. Steve makes a good point. My folks just finished watching the series for the second time.

The closest long running interesting series we’ve watched lately is Bones. Good characters, cleaver plot.

Boston Legal is a close 3rd

Arrested Development is the comedy equivalent of the West Wing. It has great production values and interesting characters. Some people put the Wire on a similar pedestal. I’ve watched season 1. I am not one of those people. Yet.

mikey – thanks for the tip. i’ve heard of that one – but know nothing about it.

steve – you’re ripping me out of context! “i didn’t always love the politics.” key word – “always”. i actually like lots of it… and i’m sure the stuff i didn’t like, you don’t like either!!!
i agree it wouldn’t have been as good if republican pres.

i passed on your suggestion to row – she laughed… i’ll try and convince her.

joelpj – i spoke to them about it yesterday arvo!! it’s actually their 3rd time through cos they watched it on tv too!!

nathan – thanks for the tips. a few people have mentioned the wire over on fb too.

    thanks guys.

The closest in terms of all those aspects I’ve ever seen is a little known series called Freaks and Geeks. Only made 18 episodes, and I had to order it in from the US and unlock the region code (read: hack) my DVD but is brilliant dramedy.

arrested development – better than west wing :)

  8. Mikey Lynch says:

    Arrested Development: vomit.

  9. Dan says:

It’s already been said, but you’ll need to content yourself with something else for a while then hit WW up again after a rest.

30 Rock is a suitable distraction while you wait.

    Heroes season 1. Amazing.

  11. davemiers says:

hey everyone. thanks for the suggestions!!
it would take a few years to watch everyone’s suggestions!!

we’ll probably go with the wire.

    peaceout

  12. joelpj says:

    nice choice

i’ve just started watching The Wire from the suggestions above.

  13. davemiers says:

it was the clear winner on facebook and offline too.

    peaceout

    up to episode 6 – i’m hooked!

watched it back and forth on the train this week. definitely a great show. good characters and a realistic slow paced plot.

few comments though – i haven’t had a chance to watch with anna yet – my guess is it will have too much language and drug themes for her to be interested.

just thought you’d like to know if its gunna be the next series you watch with rowe. will let you know if anna loves it

  15. davemiers says:

    thanks for the update!
thanks also for the heads up.
