The Briefing Online for Free

Not only have Matthias Media put the full back catalogue of Kategoria online, but they have all of the content from The Briefing now online. I think this is a good move. Check out their archives and keep up with all the fresh content. The new bi-monthly print edition is also worth checking out.

“WHAT’S IN THE BRIEFING? 1) Articles to help every Christian in their walk with God. 2) Ideas and thoughts to encourage all to be getting on with ‘everyday’ service and witnessing. 3) A Christian perspective on the actions and events of the world around us. 4) Resources for pastors and lay leaders that provide encouragement and ideas for ministers of God’s Word.”

Cross-Centred Youth Ministry – Resources

“In each generation, we are only ever a small step from losing the gospel. Generation 1 preaches the gospel; generation 2 assumes the gospel; generation 3 neglects the gospel; and generation 4 denies the gospel. How do we avoid this potential slippery slope with this current generation? The key to keeping the gospel is keeping the cross of Christ central to all that we do. We preach the cross not just for conversion, but as the daily bread for the Christian. How can we keep the cross central in our youth ministries? Do our ministries actually reflect the cross?”

Above is the blurb for my second elective yesterday arvo at NYMC… again you might need to ask someone who attended if it lived up to expectation! I’m pretty passionate about keeping the cross central in life and ministry. I really hope that people were encouraged to keep the main thing the main thing.

HERE ARE MY SLIDES FROM THE ELECTIVE

Talks will be available for download from the NYMC website.

If there’s anything else I said that I’d put on line that I haven’t… let me know!

Bloodlines: Race, Cross, and the Christian

Bloodlines is “An exclusive video documentary featuring Pastor John Piper as he walks through his personal story of growing up in the segregated South. His personal story boldly champions the transforming power of the gospel and the beauty of racial diversity and harmony in Christ.” Watch the full vid here:

Help young punks to read the Bible

Here’s a youth ministry idea: help young punks to read the Bible. That’s one of the goals behind our DAILY BIBLE JOURNAL. For these school holidays we’re encouraging our crew to read through some of the Psalms.

I was going to have a crack at writing some school holiday reading notes, but in the end thought I’d use a brilliant new resource from Matt Jacobs. It’s a project called SixtySixBooks. Basically it provides an intro to different books of the Bible in a way that youth can understand along with a sample reading plan.

We’re using Graham Stanton’s notes on the Psalms.

What strategies do you use to help young people dig into God’s word?

The Incomparable God gives strength to the weary

On Sunday night we had a special year 12 church service. It was encouraging to be able to pray for them and preach to them. I spoke from Isaiah 40 encouraging people to lift up their eyes to see the Incomparable God who offers strength to those who put their hope in him.

Here’s a link to the mp3. I hope it’s helpful for those who need a bigger picture perspective.

Get Fit for Summer… or Eternity

Summer is coming. It’s time to get fit and healthy! But eternity is also coming. Physical training is of some value, but it’s got nothing on training in godliness. Godliness will prepare you for eternity. Here is a sermon I recently preached on godliness from 1 Timothy 4:4-16…

TRAINING IN GODLINESS – Dave Miers mp3 (right click to download etc)

Structure:

ARE YOU READY FOR ETERNITY?
1) GODLINESS HAS VALUE FOR ALL THINGS
2) DELIBERATE TRAINING IN GODLINESS
3) EXAMPLES OF GODLINESS
4) THE PRIORITY OF THE WORD OF GOD
INVEST IN ETERNITY.

Hope Beyond the Grave

What do you hope for in life? What are your dreams? What are your aspirations? How certain are you that your hopes will be fulfilled? My guess is that you DO have hopes and aspirations. Often though when we talk about “hoping” for something, it’s really just another way of “wishing” for something. I really hope (wish) I win the jackpot lottery! I really hope (wish) the good looking girl takes notice of me!

But when the Bible speaks about hope, it’s not about wishful thinking. The hope offered in the Bible is actually far more than we could hope for or imagine. Hope in the Bible is certain. Guaranteed. Assured. Without a doubt.

We live in a broken world where our hopes and dreams are often shattered. And ultimately we are all on the same trajectory toward a certain death. Death is our great enemy. Death shatters all our dreams.

The good news of Christianity is that Jesus offers hope beyond the grave. It’s not some wishful thinking that I will one day go to a mystical place in the clouds. The Christian hope is a certain hope built on the physical resurrection of Jesus from the dead. The Christian hope is a certain hope that those who believe in Jesus will also be physically raised from the dead.

Have you made the switch to the HCSB?

Two months ago I began researching the possible options for replacing the popular, and now out of print, NIV 1984. The HCSB is one English translation that is beginning to gain some traction around Sydney. Here’s an endorsement video:

I’ve been reading and enjoying the HSCB during that time. I had a go at preaching from it at Soulies Undeground last month. I stumbled a number of times when reading because of my familiarity with the NIV 1984!

Have you read much of the HCSB? What do you think?
Has anyone started using it within a youth ministry? How did it go?

Life with the Grain of the Universe: Proverbs

Row and I are currently reading through Proverbs each evening. So much wisdom! But, particularly in the big chunk in the middle, it’s difficult to discern any connected between each saying. I was excited to see that my friend Andrew Errington has just linked to a bunch of studies he’s written taking a thematic approach to the book. They look really useful. Download the PDF here.

Coincidentally (are there ever coincidences?) a different friend recently asked if I had any resources that would be useful for teaching Proverbs in a youth ministry setting. I don’t, but I do now! While these weren’t written for a youth ministry setting, if they are too difficult for your group, they’d serve as a really useful tool for a leader to use in prep.

Rice Rally // 20th August 2011

RICE Rally is back again this coming Saturday. God has brought many young people to himself through this ministry over the last 10 years. I wasn’t able to make it last year, so I’m looking forward to joining in the action again this year.

Still deciding whether to take your crew along? Do it. It will be epic. Check out the website for some rad promo vids, tickets and any more info.

Blog readers – pray for this sucker! Pray that 100′s of peeps will put their trust in Jesus’ death for their sin and resurrection to new life. Pray that God would keep using youth ministry to change the world.

UNASHAMED // 19th August 2011

I’m noticing around Sydney lots of Youth Ministries getting together with others in their region. This is really cool. Some great momentum is being gained at the grass roots level that is helping to fuel discipleship and evangelism among teenagers. Here on the Northern Beaches we have a combined youth event coming up on August 19: UNASHAMED.

Historically combined events have happened on the beaches, but it’s been a few years. There are a bunch of youth pastors who get together every couple of months to hang out, encourage and pray. And last year a local leadership training event began that continued again this year. There seems to be some good momentum.

It felt like the time was right to try and do something together. We should get 250-300 young people this Friday. My hope is that the event will encourage Christian teenagers to be unashamed to follow Jesus on the Northern Beaches, and that those that aren’t already following Jesus will be challenged to consider following Him.

We’ve got Ross Ciano speaking and the band from St Paul’s Castle Hill leading the music. If you’re local – come along! If you’re not, we’d value your prayers.

Are you doing some grass roots combined youth events in your area? What works well? What lessons have you learnt? What value does it add to your own ministry?

MORE University Missions

MORE is a mission happening simultaneously across 3 Universities (UTS, UWS and MAC) throughout August. I’ll be one of the speakers. It’s a great initiative. Here’s my intro vid:

Find out more here.

I’d value your prayers over the next few weeks. Keep an eye out on twitter for updates.

Pray for Steve Chong. Now!

Steve Chong (from Kirkplace and RICE) is preaching to 7000 young punks at the Newday youth festival in England. I want to invite you to pray for him this week. Pray that God would be at work by His Spirit as Steve opens the Word and points young punks to Jesus.

It’s an amazing opportunity and it would be good if we could gather as many peeps in Sydney and Australia to partner with Steve by praying for this ministry.

Watch the vid above. And pray now.

His first talk will be roughly 630pm tonight (Tuesday 2 August – Sydney Time).

We can hopefully get another vid from Steve later in the week.

Follow him on Twitter for regular updates.

Share this vid or blog post to get others praying too. Deal?

John Stott 1921-2011 // Christ Abolished Death

John Stott, one of the greatest Christian leaders of the last century, has died this week aged 90. I’ve personally been impacted by his ministry and was saddened to hear of his death. Yet so encouraged by his faithful service and thankful that he is now with Jesus, which is better by far! Earlier this year I read his final book The Radical Disciple. Simple, precise, challenging. Throughout the book he actually spoke about it as his final book. He knew he didn’t have many years left in him, so deliberately wrote this as a farewell book.

We’re currently using Stott’s Basic Christianity as the part of the material in our Confirmation Classes at St Faith’s. It’s good stuff!

His book The Cross of Christ has probably had the most profound impact around the world in enabling Christians to see the multi-faceted jewel that is the Death of Jesus.

I’ve enjoyed reading some obituaries and tributes this week on the life and ministry of Stott.

Here’s a few:

Michael Jensen Facebooked this not long after his death, “Please, you evangelicals out there: don’t say ‘RIP’ for John Stott. It’s a prayer for the dead!” I’ve been uneasy with RIP before, but didn’t know it was a prayer for the dead. Another fella in the comments that followed Jensen’s status quoted Stott (2 Timothy commentary). Check this:

“One of the most searching tests to apply to any religion concerns its attitude to death. And measured by this test much so-called Christianity is found wanting in its black clothes, its mournful chants and its requiem masses. Of course dying can be very unpleasant, and bereavement can bring bitter sorrow. But death itself has been overthrown, and ‘blessed are the dead who die in the Lord’ (Rev. 14:13). The proper epitaph to write for a Christian believer is not a dismal and uncertain petition, ‘R.I.P.’ (requiescat in pace, ‘may he rest in peace’), but a joyful and certain affirmation ‘C.A.D.’ (‘Christ abolished death’)”

Brilliant. John Stott 1921-2011 C.A.D.

GOD HAS COME // Soulies Teaching Plan

The latest series at SOULIES is called GOD HAS COME. We will be studying the first 3 chapters of John’s Gospel. I thought it might be useful to share some of the strategy in how we are approaching the teaching at SOULIES this term. (Props to creationswap for art)

  • It’s from a gospel – any book of the bible would have been good! But, I’m keen to give a more evangelistic edge to our Friday night talks. The gospels are easy to do that because Jesus is speaking and when he’s not it’s about him.
  • Manageable chunks – rather than 3 chapters at a time we’re looking at approx 1/2 a chapter per week.
  • Junior and Senior Crew are doing the same series – this may not be the pattern forever, however, I’ve been trying to create an identity larger than just the junior group or senior group by themselves. Even if we’re in two locations, the same series helps us to identify with that larger youth community.
  • Soulies Small Groups are studying the same section – this helps to create continuity between Friday night and our Sunday small groups. While I value the principle of having leaders write their own studies, I’m also aware that that’s a big job! So I hope that having the series written will be a good service and model to small group leaders.
  • We are producing the ‘DAILY BIBLE JOURNAL‘ – this is a small booklet that encourages young punks to spend 5 minutes a day in the Bible. It includes: daily reading notes, sermon notes space and Bible study. It seemed to be received well on Friday and Sunday. I’m praying it will help to develop a hunger for the Word among our community.
  • There’s an Online component – I’m keen to use new media to encourage people to dig into the Bible. So each week, we will have a Sunday (no later than Monday) blog post with a video intro for the week’s readings as well as the daily reading notes and a link to an online Bible. I hope that this helps more people to participate.

See this blog post for a copy of the Daily Bible Journey.

Shine Music Conference 2011

‘SHINE’ is an annual, non-denominational music conference designed to equip & encourage Christian singers, musicians and technical volunteers.  Pastors will also find the day most valuable. Each year St Paul’s Castle Hill hosts a guest speaker and professional workshop leaders to help build us up in Christ & to develop the gifts that God has given us.

I really like the work that St Paul’s are doing with their music ministry.

Check out their website for more details and for online rego.

The Prodigal God – Sermon

Here is my sermon from this past weekend at St Faith’s Narrabeen. I’ve preached on Luke 15 a bunch of times in the last few years. I gave it bit of a rework over the weekend including a new title, The Prodigal God with a longer discussion on the reckless love of God. I think people found the emphasis helpful. If you had a listen and are interested in thinking through some of the ideas a bit further, check out The Prodigal God by Timothy Keller.

The Prodigal God – Luke 15:11-32 – Dave Miers [right-click to download etc...]

Also, they’ve said that a few bits were missed in the recording. I recorded a copy as well. I haven’t listened, but if you do, and it feels like something is missing, let me know and I can email a full mp3. But I’m sure you won’t miss much.

If you have a listen and realise that you are distant from God either because of your rebellion or religiosity – let me know and we (or I can find someone near where you live) can chat about how to come back to God. No pressure.
