John Piper Interviews Rick Warren on Doctrine

I’m about half way through watching this fascinating interview that John Piper recently did with Rick Warren. Warren is the Senior Pastor of Saddleback Church in Southern California. Piper and Warren have very different methodological approaches to their ministry. I’ve read some fairly harsh criticism of the author of the massively best-selling book The Purpose-Driven Life. Some of those haters might want to repent of their critique that Warren lacks any doctrinal depth. Piper has a thorough break-down and overview of the interview here.

Let me know what you think.

Warren is one of my favourite Tweeters. Earlier today he began an encouraging trend on twitter: #GospelHaiku. Go have a read. Here’s mine.

pastors and bible college students – watch it!! all the way to the end.

    peace

  3. I really appreciated where Piper talks of the need for a more Christocentric talk of the glory of God. I want to think a bit more about this, because I’ve felt that when Piper speaks about the glory of God is it always as the transcendent, big, almighty, glorious God, perhaps at the expense of God’s glory expressed as he is butchered as a man on the cross. I often wonder if it means his “God desires his own glory above all things” needs a little nuancing if we are to view his glory as primarily demonstrated on the cross.

Not sure yet. I don’t want to play one of against the other. But something I am thinking about, and need to think about more…

  4. unfortunately I saw this post before I started to watch the interview… I’m trying hard not to think about the questions raised in this post as I watch, have them shape what I hear.

I guess I’m slow cause I am not aware of the controversy regarding Warren or read ‘purpose drive life’

    1. interested to hear what you think.

there have been some who have been really ungodly in their critique of rick warren.
challies is not one of those people.
so i appreciate the tone of his blog post.
