City on a Hill Brisbane // Save The Date

Save The Date!

In February, we began gathering people together in our lounge room to open the bible, pray, and dream about what God might do through this new church. After outgrowing our lounge room, we moved into a local cafe, and then in time into an old church building just outside the City.

But we believe that now is the time to invite the rest of Brisbane along. We have a launch date!

LAUNCH: OCTOBER 23

Sunday, October 23 marks the opening service for City on a Hill: Brisbane! This date coincides with the 9th Anniversary of City on a Hill and to help launch this new chapter we will celebrate after our service with a launch party.

More details to come, but for now, please save the date!

PRAYER REQUESTS

  • Give thanks for the provision of meeting spaces for our team gatherings
  • Give thanks for lives already changed by the good news of Jesus
  • Give thanks for ongoing support of City on a Hill team in Victoria
  • Pray for final negotiations with Brisbane CBD launch venue
  • Pray for unity and joy in our new Sunday Service ministry teams
  • Pray that the lost will be reached with the light of Christ

TEAM GATHERINGS

Our Sunday Team Gatherings will continue to meet between now and our launch on Sundays from 10:30am at 58 Maygar Street, Windsor QLD 4030 (City Kids check-in from 10:20am).

City on a Hill: Brisbane // Ready For Some Good News?

The Revolution of Man

Joel is a rifleman in the Australian Army and in 2015 he moved to Brisbane to be based at the Enoggera Barracks. He’s been part of our team gatherings from the start. One of his colleagues, Jason, noticed that Joel had been leaving the base at the same time every Friday night.

When confronted, Joel was able to share something of his trust in Jesus and he invited Jason to come and join in a City on a Hill: Brisbane Friday Night Gathering.

Jason went to a Catholic school, but had never understood the significance of Jesus in his every day life. His third visit coincided with the launch of The Revolution of Man, our new teaching series in Mark’s gospel. In chapter 1 Jesus said, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe the gospel.” (verse 15)

In response to this challenge from Jesus, Jason turned to put his trust in Christ! Good news, right? It’s been such an encouragement to see him grasp hold of what Christ has done at the cross and the implications for all who come after Jesus.

Jason said that it’s a real joy to now ‘have hope that there is life after death through Jesus’.

I love seeng the way that God has used Joel in Jason’s life, and also another team member, Scott, who has already begun discipling Jason to grow strong in the Lord.

Please join us in giving thanks to God for his kindness to Jason in the gospel. Ask God to save many more as Jesus is made known in Brisbane!

THE MONTH AHEAD ~ JUNE 2016

GOSPEL COMMUNITIES

This weekend, in place of our normal Friday Night + Sunday Morning Gatherings, we are launching 4 new gospel communities. These are smaller communities of life, love and mission that will meet all across the city and suburbs. Our hope is that the launch this weekend will be a great time of relationship, celebration and expectancy.

  • Friday night 3 June in Enoggera, and
  • Sunday morning 5 June in Clayfield, Hawthorne, and Wellington Point (this group will normally be based in West End).

These groups will ordinarily be meeting on Tuesday or Wednesday night (commencing 14 & 15 June). All the information for Gospel Communities can be found on our Facebook page. Please let me know if you’d like me to forward the GC email that went out to all those who signed up.

FRIDAY NIGHT + SUNDAY MORNING GATHERINGS

Our June Friday Night Gatherings will restart on June 10 at Primal Pantry Nundah (cnr Aspinall St + Station St) from 6:15pm.

Our June Sunday Morning Gatherings will restart on June 12 at our house in Nundah (email brisbane@cityonahill.com.au for the address). Coffee from 10am, City Kids check-in from 10:15am, and Gathering from 10:30am. If you can stick around for lunch afterwards, please bring something to share.

THE ENGINE ROOM

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain.” (Psalm 127:1a) The Engine Room is an opportunity to come together each month to earnestly pray that God would build something that lasts in and through City on a Hill: Brisbane.

We will be gathering together to pray on Wednesday June 8 from 730-900pm at Cara’s House in Sherwood (email brisbane@cityonahill.com.au for the address).

CITY ON A HILL: BRISBANE // DO YOU KNOW JESUS?

DO YOU KNOW JESUS?

DO YOU KNOW JESUS?

Life is busy. You know that. And I know that. For our family we are busy getting used to new rhythms of life in a new city, and preparing to launch a new church through team gatherings, training events and lots of preparation.

In the midst of the many pressing needs, I’ve been struck recently by the need to really know Jesus. At City on a Hill we are seeking to do everything under the one banner of ‘Knowing Jesus and Making Jesus Known’. Am I deliberately taking time in the chaos of life to simply be with Jesus? As I cultivate relationships with new connections in Brisbane, am I cultivating my relationship with Jesus?

I’m reminded of the confronting interaction Jesus will have on the last day with people who thought they knew him,

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (Matthew 7:21-23 ESV)

Our hope is that the Lord will do mighty works through us. But do I know Jesus? And more importantly, am I known by Jesus?

This weekend marks a transition for our City on a Hill: Brisbane team. We are moving our Friday Night Gathering to a local cafe and we are seeking to multiply our team by commencing a new Sunday Morning Gathering in our lounge room. God-willing, our hope is to double our average attendance from 45 to 90 over the next few months.

We will also be commencing, along with the rest of City on a Hill, a new teaching series The Revolution of Man (CHECK OUT THE TRAILER). It will be a 16-week journey exploring Mark’s account of the most notable historical figure this world has ever seen. From Jerusalem then to our world today, Jesus continues to revolutionise cities, nations, and the epicentre of human existence – our heart, mind and soul.

My prayer is that through this season God would continue to revolutionise my heart and the hearts of those the Lord is gathering to our team. It really is a timely word if we are serious about knowing Jesus. And likewise a wonderful opportunity to be making Jesus known to those who don’t yet know him.

The majority of people receiving these monthly updates are not in Brisbane. I’m really thankful for each of you and your prayerful partnership. Would you join me in praying for a Jesus-centred revolution in me, my family, our team, and our city? As I send this out, I’m praying the same for you. Please let me know other ways that I can be in prayer for you.

CITY ON A HILL: BRISBANE // A SOLID AND STURDY FOUNDATION

April Newsletter

A SOLID AND STURDY FOUNDATION

With a river running through the middle of Brisbane, there are many bridges connecting north and south. I recently stood on Victoria Bridge and could see 32 cranes from that one vantage point. That’s a lot of construction, but that’s only one vantage point! There are cranes all over the City and indeed the inner suburbs of Brisbane. It’s a rapidly growing City tipped to increase from 2.3million to 3million people in the next 5 years!

The presence of these cranes helps to focus our mission. First, there are a lot of people moving into this City, people who need to be introduced to Jesus. Second, there’s a sense in which we are very much in a crane phase of our church. The crane matters for a solid and sturdy foundation in building apartments AND in building the church.

We are so thankful to God for the solid and sturdy foundation he is building among us. By the end of March we have seen over 80 different Brisbane people join us at one of our Friday Night Gatherings, with 40-50 people gathering each week. More exciting than the number of people is the depth of relationships being formed, the leaders who are being raised up, and how our community is being grounded in the gospel of Jesus’ death and resurrection for sinners. According to Tim Keller, new churches best reach new generations, new residents, and new people groups. God is gathering each of those ‘new’ people to be part of City on a Hill: Brisbane. We have mature Christians, Christians looking for a home, new Christians, and also people who aren’t yet Christian.

To keep up-to-date with all that God is doing among us, please follow our regular updates on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

THE MONTH AHEAD ~APRIL 2016

FRIDAY NIGHT GATHERINGS

Friday nights continue at our house in Nundah (email brisbane@cityonahill.com.au for the address). April 8, April 15, April 22, April 29. Coffee from 5:30pm. Dinner from 6pm. Gathering from 7pm. Kick-on from 8:30pm. Facebook Event.

The Lead Pastor of City on a Hill – Guy Mason – will be joining us in Brisbane on Friday April 8. I’m really looking forward to introducing Guy to those he is yet to meet. On the night we will hear more about how Guy came to know Jesus, the story of City on a Hill, the vision ahead, and extended Q&A.

THANK GOD IT’S MONDAY

Work: we spend the majority of our waking hours doing it, yet many of us hardly know why.

For some, work is a chore – an interruption to life, keeping us from what we really want to do. For others, work is life – the place where we find our significance and status. Still others long for work, feeling the restlessness of unemployment or retirement, looking from the outside in on a world at work.

So what’s the purpose of work – and how do we do it well?

At City on a Hill we believe God gave us work for a reason – and we want to discover that. Join us throughout April for our new series: ‘Thank God It’s Monday’, where we will explore God’s purpose in our work.

THE ENGINE ROOM

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain.” (Psalm 127:1a) The Engine Room is an opportunity to come together each month to earnestly pray that God would build something that lasts in and through City on a Hill: Brisbane.

After an encouraging time at our first prayer night will be gathering together again on Wednesday April 13 from 730-900pm at Michael + Izzy’s House in Hawthorne (email brisbane@cityonahill.com.au for the address).

PRAYER POINTS

  • Longer Term Venue – we have a team that are currently scouting out options for when we go live with Sunday services later in the year. Pray for wisdom and the Lord to provide.
  • Gospel Communities – after a fruitful Leaders Lab in March, we are getting ready to begin 4-5 Gospel Communities in May. Pray we’d launch healthy groups, in accessible locations, that will multiply in months to come.

We continue to thank God for those who have already begun financially supporting this mission. Would you consider partnering in this way? CITY ON A HILL: BRISBANE // GOD IS ON THE MOVE

Fridays-Mar-2016-800

Hello Friends!

GOD IS ON THE MOVE

God has been so kind! One month into our Friday Night Gatherings, we can already see God’s hand at work. It has been a joy to see people welcoming one another into this new community, sharing good food, hearing God in the scriptures, and praying boldly that Jesus would be made known in Brisbane and beyond.

Here’s what some of our team have said about our gatherings…

“It was an awesome night! There was a great energy there which was clearly the Holy Spirit doing his thing. Backed up by a great word from the gospel. I can’t wait for next Friday night.”

“Everyone I met seemed very keen on building City on a Hill and making something special.”

“I loved that the word was brought as central even to the first gathering, and I loved the application of God working in a broken world and ending with prayer.”

“We are excited to see what God has planned for City on a Hill: Brisbane and are keen to be part of the journey. We love the passion and generous spirit demonstrated already in this community.”

Please join us in giving thanks to God for the past month and praying that he would continue to raise up a team of men, women and children to be part of knowing Jesus and making Jesus known through City on a Hill: Brisbane.
