I hope this email finds you well. See below for the latest news from Dave Miers and City on a Hill: Brisbane.
I’m really excited for the launch of our new City on a Hill teaching series Happiness is. It’s based on the Beatitudes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.
In the 4th Century BC, Aristotle said “Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.”
Our new series HAPPINESS IS will be an opportunity for you, your friends, and indeed our city to explore the beauty, truth and wonder of true happiness.
Across all services we will be exploring Jesus’ Beatitudes in His famous Sermon on the Mount.
Our pastors will be pointing us to Jesus and revealing what Jesus says about true life, meaning, fulfilment and happiness. It will be counter-cultural, unexpected, and absolutely life changing for each and everyone of us.
This is going to be an amazing start to the year. We look forward to what God is going to do for our good and His glory.
The Happiness is theme will be present in our Sunday preaching, community groups and personal bible reading journals. We will also be seeking to engage the community online through social media and microsite and offline through personal invitations and a street team set up on Swanston Street.
To kick it off we are throwing 2 big parties after church this weekend. The midday party will be held in a function room at Hoyts Melbourne Central and the second will be at a roof top bar. See details below and click images for facebook event details:
One of my roles at City on a Hill is Mercy Director. That means I’m seeking to help our church to be people who show comfort, care and compassion to those in need. I oversee the different mercy ministries across our 3 sites: Melbourne, West Melbourne, and Geelong. Many Rooms, our ministry to the homeless of Melbourne, is a significant part of that ministry.
I love what God is doing through the people of City on a Hill in and through this ministry. You can learn more about Many Rooms in the excellent video above.
I wrote an article on our website this week about our Kitchen in North Melbourne and our plans to begin a new kitchen in the CBD in January 2015. Here is an extract:
City on a Hill is a church established 7 years ago in the heart of Melbourne that seeks to Know Jesus and Make Jesus Known. From the beginning our desire has been to serve the city and help care for the most vulnerable.
In November 2009, Many Rooms opened its doors for the first time with The Kitchen in North Melbourne. Our vision: “as God has loved us in Jesus, so we aim to love and care for the homeless of Melbourne“
In the past 5 years we have seen close to 20,000 meals served. Since starting that first Saturday, we have served lunch every week. And 2 years ago we began serving breakfast every Saturday as well.
What Many Rooms provides is more than just food for those in need, but community in a city where it’s easy to be disconnected and on the margins.
At the end of October, City on a Hill celebrated its 7th birthday. His Story Our Story was a massive encouragement to see the many evidences of God’s grace over the last 7 years. We sang songs, we prayed, the kids performed Oh How I Need You, our plans to plant a Church in Brisbane were announced, Guy Mason preached a cracking sermon on The Great Commission, and 17 people were baptised.
In the last 12 months City on a Hill: Geelong and City on a Hill: West have been planted. This meant that His Story Our Story was the first gathering of Melbourne, Geelong and West all together in the one location. I love being part of what God is doing in and through City on a Hill and, by God’s grace, look forward to what he will continue to do in the future!
Below are two of the videos shown during the event at Melbourne Town Hall. The first is a short documentary style film looking back and looking forward. The second gives a glimpse into the lives of some of the people who were baptised on the day.
