I like Jazz. Last night, the Richard Maegraith Band made some sweet Jazz! It was the launch of ‘Free Running‘. Gary Daley played the Fender Rhodes to perfection. Jonathon Zwartz ran free on double bass. Tim Firth smashed it on drums. Kristin Berardi scat subliminal sounds. And Richard owned the floor on tenor sax. Enjoy the bootleg:
Richard Maegraith Album Launch
THE RICHARD MAEGRAITH BAND are launching their debut album next Wednesday night. Watch/listen to some tunes. Read Con Campbell’s review. Download a free song + MP3 ring tone! And read about Richard’s job. He is still one very cool jazz cat…

His new album is called Free Running. The launch is at The Basement and should be a killer night. Below are all the details off the flyer.
Davis, Henderson, Mayfield + Winehouse
I got some new music from JB Hifi on Thursday night. I had a $40 gift voucher and picked up 4 CDs from Miles, Joe, Curtis + Amy.

- Miles Davis – Kind of Blue: This CD is incredible. Chris got it for me for my 21st birthday, but it was stolen (we think) sometime in the last year. It’s considered to be one of the greatest Jazz albums of all time and Rolling Stone had it at #12 on their 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
- Joe Henderson – Page One: This was a reasonably random purchase. I was deciding between this one and a couple of other Jazz albums – and I chose this one because I liked the cover. It’s an awesome CD!!
- Curtis Mayfield – The Very Best Of: About 10 years ago I heard a Curtis Mayfield song on the radio and wrote his name on my steering wheel so that I wouldn’t forget to look up more of his works. It’s taken 10 years – but The Very Best of Curtis Mayfield is very cool. He has a similar sound to Marvin Gaye. Soul, R&B, Funk.
- Amy Winehouse – Frank: This is her debut album from 2003. Winehouse smashes out some killer R&B, Soul and Jazz tracks.
Free Tunes
Nestle is giving out free songs on iTunes with the purchase of lollies and chocolate. I like free music! Below are the 5 I downloaded last night.

- Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) – Chris Tomlin
- Anyone Else But You – The Moldy Peaches
- This Heart Attack – Faker
- Zombie – The Cranberries
- Crazy – Gnarls Barkley
You can only download 5 tracks per iTunes account. This means that I have 2 spare songs available for download. Do you want them? Tell me what 2 songs you’d download. I will give the codes for the 2 songs at the end of the week to the best entry(ies).
Pic from the cranberries and the idea for this post is from Josh Griffin
I’m believe’n
I heart the music at Saturday EV! The week by week singing is gold and the items are top-quality.

The vid below is Sam Stephenson performing I’m believe’n. It even includes a refrain from O Holy Night!
Caravan – Duke Ellington
Just discovered the website of a class mate from bible school. Richard Maegraith is one very cool jazz cat! He’s got an album launch at the basement in June.

Check out the YouTube vid below of Caravan by Duke Ellington performed by Orghan-um Trio featuring Richard Maegraith – tenor, Gary Daley – organ and Jamie Castrisos – drums.
Music and Youth Sub-Cultures
I recently gave Dan an essay question. He did a fine job in answering it. Originally the plan was to use some of his thinking in an intro for a talk, but the talk changed its tack… but it’s still helpful – and will most definitely help in an upcoming talk.

Here’s the question: In 100-1000 words (100 is fine – just saying 1000 in case you want to go crazy* with it!) discuss the impact of music on youth sub-cultures. Your answer should include the relationship of music to youth sub-culture and the changing cultural trends during the last 20 years.
Katie Noonan Live
Katie Noonan covers Gnarls Barkley ‘Crazy’ on Sunrise:
Sublime: Katie Noonan and the ACO
Katie Noonan has the best and most beautifully versatile female voice in Australia. Last Wednesday night we went to see her singing with the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) at the City Recital Hall in Angel Place, Sydney.

It was an absolute musical treat to hear the smooth vocals of Noonan and the energetic performance from the ACO.
Dig Lazarus, Dig
The Centre for Public Christianity website was launched on Good Friday. CPX is “a research and media organisation promoting the public understanding of the Christian faith.” John Dickson and Greg Clarke are the big daddies of the venture and it looks like they’ve got some good gear happening.
In the video below, Greg Clarke reviews the latest Nick Cave album: Dig Lazarus, Dig. Check out the text version.
Band review: DAYBREAK
Daybreak played at Church on Sunday night. The young band consists of drums, guitar, bass + vox. They were good. They seemed a bit uncomfortable playing at church, but I think that had more to do with congregational song selection than it did talent. Their lead singer looked a little bit uncomfortable up front, but again that may have simply been the context in which they were playing.

They list the following musical influences: U2, dcTalk, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Delirious?, Radiohead, Switchfoot, Powderfinger, Jeff Buckley, Midnight Oil, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree and Crowded House. Listen to some of their originals on their MySpace page, including tracks from their new ep: Reaching for the Surface – good stuff. I don’t know of many evangelical bands playing good tunes in and around Sydney. Could Daybreak be the next Revive??
If you’re looking for a band for a youth event, Daybreak might be your answer! Got any other recommendations?
Larry Norman Tribute
Larry Norman “the father of Christian rock” died last week. Here’s some coverage from blogs I read: Challies, Marko, JT, Doxologist, Steve and now saturdayEV. In the vid below Jon Baldwin from saturdayEV performs a tribute.
ps – here’s a longer version of the same vid
Lifetone music
I have a friend who has spammed me on facebook about his band: Lifetone. They describe themselves as “Word-infused praise and worship music”. They have a radiohead-esque deal where you decide what you will pay for their album: Who Hopes For What They Already Had?… sweet deal! I’ve listened to snippets of the tracks from their website and from what I’ve heard, it sounds good.
Similar sounds include: Coldplay, U2, Snow Patrol, Smashing Pumpkins, David Crowder Band, Leeland, United, Garage Hymnal.
Check it out and let me know me know how much you decide to pay!
(ps – free sheet music available on the site too…)
Sing Unto the Lord
Dan Godden is my brother-in-law, partner in proclaiming Jesus, and friend. He’s had a few goes at blogging over the past couple of years. It looks like he is now hitting it consistently! Most of his blog content is thinking through church music. Go check it out.
He’s spent the last week posting some content from some documents he’s preparing for the ccec music crew on the area of magnification:
