COME HOME – 5 Youth Sermons

Last week I spoke to 50 year 12 students each day on the Christ Church Youth Year 12 Study Hall (check out their swanky new website). The 5 talks were from Luke’s gospel on the theme “COME HOME”. We kicked off in Luke 15 and saw how the rebellious son and the religious son were both lost and need to come home to their father. I think it was challenging to both church kids and non-church kids. Waiting for Jesus – 3 Youth Sermons from Titus

Over the weekend I enjoyed hanging out with the young punks from Logos youth group (Asquith Anglican).  They’re a really encouraging group.  I particularly enjoyed hearing the way that God had been at work in the lives of some of their leaders and also youth. God is very kind. We studied the book of Titus (read it here). It was the second time I’ve done the talks (here’s the first). I was sick in the early hours of Sunday morning. God sustained me through the Sunday talk! Download the MP3s:

Shout out to Edward Sowden who accompanied me on the road trip. Good times.

And also to Jess Moreton for all her help in transcribing the talks. You rock!

Never Be Destroyed – Summary of Daniel Series

I’ve enjoyed spending lots of time in Daniel during the past couple of months: I wrote 6 blogs posts; gave a 5 talk series on 2 camps; wrote an exam answer on Political Philosophy from Daniel 4 and 5; suffered an academic injury writing an essay on History and Providence in Daniel; and been encouraged to keep trusting the “one like a son of man” – Jesus.  Here’s a key verse about Jesus from Daniel 7:14 “He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshipped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.”

Here is the whole series:

(The talks from CMS Camp MMM were probably the better ones.)

Shout out to John Woodhouse and his 1984 sermon series, Daniel for Today.

Cherrybrook + Dural Combined Youth Camp

Cherrybrook Anglican and Dural Anglican are doing great work in their respective youth ministries. Last weekend I was able to join them both on their annual combined youth camp. This is a brilliant idea!! Rather than having 2 camps of 25 young punks each, they join forces to have a camp for 50 young punks.

Here are 3 benefits of two local youth groups joining up for a camp/special events: 1) Once a room has 50 peeps in it, there is enough of a critical mass to start creating a pretty sweet vibe; 2) 50+ people makes organisational sense, good for booking a camp site, good for sharing the leadership responsibility with both churches; 3) While it doesn’t make you any more or less the people of God, it’s a good thing to unite with brothers and sisters from your broader family.

If you help run a smaller group, why not share some of the love with another smaller and like-minded group of believers? Do it.

Never Be Destroyed – Talk MP3’s from CMS Camp MMM

I’m not sure what MMM stands for, maybe it had something to do with Mission, Mountains and maybe Magpies? Not sure. Doesn’t matter. Camp MMM is run by Church Missionary Society (CMS). While it got down to zero degrees celsius in Katoomba during camp, it really was a smoking hot camp! Lots of the camps I speak on are very good camps. They all take the Bible seriously and seek to honour Jesus in everything. The thing that made this camp stand out from others was the 1-hour mission spot each day.

The 200 or so peeps on camp were challenged each day to be on board with God’s mission of taking the gospel to the ends of the earth. It was such an encouragement to hear from a bunch of different missionaries about the work they are part of in different corners of the world. Check out CMS website: click me.

I spoke from Daniel 1-7 on the topic Never Be Destroyed (read the blog posts here). God is very kind: 4 of the senior campers became Christian; and another 10 or so recommitted themselves to live with Jesus as their King. Yeeeeewww!! Here are the talk MP3’s, right click to download:

Never Be Destroyed – Talk MP3’s from QLD Launch Camp

At the end of June/start of July, I enjoyed a week with some keen young leaders from South East Queensland. Youthsurge help to run the Launch Camps aimed at developing young leaders. The topic was Never Be Destroyed (read the blog series here) from Daniel 1-7. Along the way, we learnt some great things from Daniel the leader, but the best thing was working out what it will mean to be part of Jesus’ never ending kingdom.

It was great to hang out with old friend Danny Mitchell and new friend Stu Hoadley. They’re both doing a killer job championing youth ministry in Queensland.

Local Missionaries – RICE Leaders Day Out

The crazy RICE season is fast approaching. (Pray for it!) I gave an evangelism seminar on Saturday at Leaders Day Out. It’s called “Local Missionaries”. Download below.

I kicked off in the Great Commission, encouraged the group to think like local missionaries and then gave a strategy for evangelism in youth ministry that doesn’t depend on big events. It was a bit rushed in the 2nd half, but I think it was useful. If you were there and want any of the stuff I spoke about, let me know.
