Driscoll on Emerging and Emergent

Download this article (pdf) now! It’s one of the best articles I’ve read on the emerging church. Check out some of his other notes & resources + the sermon on the emerging church (I haven’t listened to it yet).

Mark Driscoll helpfully traces something of the beginnings of the emerging church, what it looks like now and some thoughts on the future.

King Street Newtown

He describes 3 different types of churches:

  • Church 1.0 is traditional and institutional
  • Church 2.0 is contemporary (currently the dominant model in the US)
  • Church 3.0 is emerging and missional.

Should women pursue men?

Mark Driscoll was asked this question during question time in his sermon on “dating”. If you are a single man – watch the clip below to see his answer. If you are a single woman – watch it. If you are married – watch it so you can encourage your friends!

Driscoll says that the most under-represented demographic in churches are men in the 18-34 age bracket. Mars Hill Church invest much of their energy into reaching these men. In a culture and context where young “men” spend on average 2.5 hours on video games per day – it’s time to man up!

The sermon is very good – check it out on the Mars Hill Church website (it also has links on how to do it in iTunes)

Here are some more clips from the sermon and question time:

Safe Internet Use

I’ve been asked a few times recently for some resources on Kids and the Internet. Here are some notes that I’ve written previously for this page.

John Piper Live

I’m currently listening to John Piper preach live at The Resurgence Text and Context Conference… in Seattle!! They have set up a live video stream.

Text and Context

Justin Buzzard is live blogging the event. Here are his first 6 posts:

Who am I?

… is the question that has been asked each week during the four part series that Scott Petty has just finished at Senior High (new site). We’ve really enjoyed our time so far at Senior High. We’ve been warmly welcomed, and I’m particularly enjoying Scott’s speaking each week. He’s very good at engaging with the Bible and applying it appropriately to his Senior High audience.

Who am I?

Here’s the outline of the series:

  • #1 Made in the image of God
  • #2 Sinners saved by grace
  • #3 Part of a bigger family
  • #4 I’m a citizen of heaven

Two of the talks are online (I’m assuming the other two are coming). Good stuff.

What series have you started the year with in your youth ministry?

Soccer vs Cricket

Generation Next embraces the A-League is an interesting article comparing the crowd at yesterdays football (soccer) match and the crowd at the cricket match next door.

soccer vs cricket

Here’s a snippet:

Yesterday, generation next chose soccer over cricket. There were more aviator sunglasses at the SFS than on the set of Top Gun. Twenty-something women in tight shorts almost outnumbered the blokes with designer sideburns. They all marched through the gates to the techno beats of an outdoor DJ, who bleeped and tweaked alongside the main entrance.

I think this has implications for churches engaging with their culture. Continue Reading…

A-League Grand Final 08

Newcastle Jets defeated Central Coast Mariners 1-0. By the looks of it, the Mariners didn’t deserve to win, but nonetheless there were some frustrating decisions from the referee. The match ended in controversy. Watch the videos below for more…

The match highlights:

Why I’m NOT going to the Grand Final

The big game is tonight and I’m not going. I’m not going because I worship the Creator and not creation. I’m not going because I worship the Saviour and not soccer.

Mariners Fever

We finished at our old church in January and it was a genuine temptation to not start at our new church until March, so I could spend February watching all the big Sunday night matches. How stupid! That would have been serving a false god (soccer) instead of the True and Living God (Jesus).

If you know me at all, you’d know that I love soccer, but I hope you also know that I love Jesus more.

Live video feeds

The Resurgence conference are doing a live internet feed for their conference. I’m about to watch the simply youth ministry podcast live (in about 5 minutes). This type of thing is becoming easier and easier to do. Look out for the dave miers dot com live video feed…

C.J. Mahaney Podcast

Sovereign Grace have just begun a new podcast: Leadership Interview Series. It’s particularly aimed at Pastors in thinking through Christian leadership, but is beneficial for all listeners. Josh Harris is the host along with Jeff Purswell and C.J. Mahaney (he’s now blogging).

I’ve only listened to the first few minutes, but the show notes have links to some great books and resources. I look forward to learning from CJ’s cross-centred wisdom.

Roy & HG – The Dream

Do you remember this? Roy & HG’s The Dream was one of the highlights of the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Below is an example of their infamous commentary on Men’s Gymnastics. Gold!

Seeing in a mirror dimly

Go check out Mark Earngey’s blog Seeing in a mirror dimly. It’s a fusion of theology, philosphy, culture, politics and fun. Just found this video starring Mark.

seeing in a mirror dimly

Mark used to be an MC in a Hip Hop crew… I was talking to him today about forming a Hip Hop crew and busting some rhymes to help with learning Greek.

What are some good names for our band? Grip Grop? The adelphos brothers? Any suggestions?

I like fonts

I really like fonts! Ten years ago I overused Comic Sans. I’ve now repented and discovered a world of fonts that really rox my sox. Dafont.com is the bomb. I like the work of Last Soundstrack. I subscribe to i love typography and smashing magazine. The font below is barnes erc. Now that I’m doing design jobs – I’m starting to donate some cash to the font designers each time I use their work for jobs.

Do you dig fonts? What are your top 3 fonts? Share the love…

New World Game Website

SBS have just launched a fresh new look for their The World Game website (more info on the game they play in heaven). It’s got more of the web 2.0 interactive feel to it (just like triple j), but I don’t think the design is brilliant. It’s a step in the right direction, just needs a bit of tweaking.

Do you need a website designed? Maybe I can help you? Let me know…

ps – The Jets will be joining the Mariners in the big A-League GF next Sunday night…
