I’m a bit of an early adopter. A few years ago I discovered twitter. It now seems that the rest of the world is catching on! Twits update their twitter account from their mobile or computer with what they are doing at any particular time. I subscribe to the ESV daily twitter and get bible verses on my phone every day. That’s pretty cool. But does the world and/or you really need to know what I’m doing? Do you twitter? Should I twitter?

It’s not wrong for Christians to be liked by the world. But it is wrong for Christians to do ungodly things to make themselves more likeable. For Christian teenagers there is a great temptation to be liked and to succumb to peer pressure.

Jesus makes it clear in John 15 that the world hates Him and His followers. There are times when Christians, like their master Jesus, are hated for no apparent reason. It’s not often nice to be hated! And so when you know that the world hates you, the temptation is even greater to do stuff to try impress people and so be liked.
What should you do when you’re tempted to be liked for the wrong reasons?

Nestle is giving out free songs on iTunes with the purchase of lollies and chocolate. I like free music! Below are the 5 I downloaded last night.

- Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) – Chris Tomlin
- Anyone Else But You – The Moldy Peaches
- This Heart Attack – Faker
- Zombie – The Cranberries
- Crazy – Gnarls Barkley
You can only download 5 tracks per iTunes account. This means that I have 2 spare songs available for download. Do you want them? Tell me what 2 songs you’d download. I will give the codes for the 2 songs at the end of the week to the best entry(ies).

Hallo.

Job was an Emo. He had good reason to be! His oxen and donkeys were nicked and all but one of the servants looking after them were slashed (Job 1:14). A crazy fire ball engulfed all his sheep and all but one of the shepherds (Job 1:16). Three sets of Chaldean Guerrillas nabbed his camels and killed all but one of the camel handlers (Job 1:17). Next, his sons and daughters were crushed to death as their building collapsed while they were partying (Job 1:18).

Job went from having plenty to having nothing, from riches to rags. Soon he was afflicted with sores from head to toe (Job 2:7) and he sat amongst ashes self-harming himself with broken pottery (Job 2:8). Although Job didn’t know why he was suffering, he was to still recognise that in the good times and the bad times, that “the name of the LORD is to be praised” (Job 1:21).
You may not suffer like Job suffered, but you don’t have to be alive for long to know that we live in a world where EVERYONE is intimately effected by suffering. It’s pretty easy to be “Emo” about the world and the situations in which we find ourselves. How do you cheer up an Emo kid?

Sam and Soph are celebrating the 2 year birthday of their blog. Except for these six posts in 2004 and 2005, this blog started properly in early May 2006, with this post. When I let the cat out of the bag, my aim was to be: concise, colourful, original and insightful. I think to varying degrees, I’ve kept the aim the same for the last two years.

In February this year, I changed the address to davemiers.com and made the blog into a 3-pronged business. Designing is the most cumbersome part of dmdc. It takes longer to produce work for someone else than it does for yourself, but I’m enjoying the websites and other design work I’m currently working on. Writing is probably the most stressful part of dmdc. Deadlines are hard to keep, but I think I’ve been able to produce some good material. Speaking is the part of dmdc that brings the most joy. It’s such a privilege to be able to proclaim Jesus to teenagers around New South Wales, encourage their youth leaders and see different styles of youth ministry. Although, it’s a bit weird getting paid to do it!
Thanks for reading, supporting and friending dmdc and its owner… warm fuzzies all ’round! (Bonus warm fuzzy for each commenter)

I’ve deleted the post from Tuesday night. Sorry for complaining. Here’s a better post. It’s about Jesus. I will probably refer to this passage in a talk from Job this Friday night.

Hebrews 4:14-16
14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. 16Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Lamentations was written by the prophet Jeremiah around the time of the Babylonians doing the smack down on Jerusalem in about 587BC. It’s a lament where Jeremiah mourns the horror of the destruction.

This small book contains some of the heaviest and most tragic verses in all of scripture. Yet in the midst of great pain and anguish are some incredible verses about the faithfulness of God. Check out Lamentations 3:19-26…

The St Ives Senior High leaders had a weekend away up here on the Central Coast over the weekend. We hung out with them on Saturday arvo + night. We went to SaturdayEV before going to a zany restaurant in Wyoming. I think the St Ives crew enjoyed SaturdayEV and it was a valuable time getting to know them better.

I’ve heard a lot of sermons this year, and while it may or may not have been the ‘best’ sermon** of the year, Tim preached from Colossians 1:21-23, a sermon that really encouraged me to keep holding firmly to Jesus. HAVE A LISTEN TO THE SERMON.
**How the heck do you work out the ‘best’ sermon of the year anyway!?

Hey, Hey it’s Saturday! Do you like the new name of this Saturday post? It pretty much describes the 4 main areas that I use to categorise regular posts and links. The other finalist was Hey, Hey it’s Saturday! Row liked it, but I think it’s a bit lame…

There has been a bit of blog talk today on “Red-Letter Christians.” Justin Taylor had a post this morning quoting DA Carson on Red-Letter Christians and Ben Bathgate has a good round up this arvo of all the discussion on Red-Letter Christians and Red-Letter Bibles.

Red-Letter Bibles are the ones with the “words of Christ” in red. Red-Letter Christians are those who devote themselves to those red letters. Red-Letter Bibles hurt my eyes, and although they sometimes help me to follow the flow of the narrative, the concept of Jesus’ words in red being more special than all the other words is a flawed view God’s revelation of himself in the whole of the Bible.

Youthworks are running their biennial ‘Theology of Youth Ministry’ conference again this year. I went to the conference in 2006 and found it very helpful. The theme this year: Connecting the Unconnected – Thinking Strategically about Missional Engagement with Youth.

I’ll see how the work load is going at college – but I’m hoping to make it along. If you are a Youth Pastor – go and be part of this conference! More info youthworks.net or download rego form (pdf). Here are the speakers and Papers they will be presenting:

In Acts 5 the apostles were dragged before the big wigs and told to shut up about Jesus, or else… This wasn’t the first time either! Back in Acts 4:20 after they were warned to shut up about Jesus they said: “we can’t help but speak of what we’ve seen and heard in Christ Jesus.”

On this occasion, they end up getting released again – not before they are flogged. Check out their reaction:

The post title says it all! Here are 4 snapshots from the last couple of days. On Friday night I spoke at the Blue Mountains Youthsurge – the sketch of me was drawn by a kid during my interview. The talk was okay – but I’ll be making some significant changes for when I do it again in a couple of weeks.

Good sleep in on Saturday. Won soccer 8-0 (scored 1 set up 3 or 4). Took some photos in the city. Had dinner with Row and Ruth after equip. Went with Row, Robyn (Row’s mum), Rach (Row’s sister) and Nath (Rach’s husband) in the Mothers Day Classic at the Domain this morning. Relaxed arvo. Scott Petty gave a great talk this evening at Senior High. It was the 2nd in a 3 part series on Jesus: Prophet, Priest and King. Now finishing the easiest essay of my life! Peaceout.
