A-League Grand Final 08

Newcastle Jets defeated Central Coast Mariners 1-0. By the looks of it, the Mariners didn’t deserve to win, but nonetheless there were some frustrating decisions from the referee. The match ended in controversy. Watch the videos below for more…

The match highlights:

The goal:

Danny Vukovic getting sent off:

I don’t believe Vukovic deserves to be banned for life… he was simply giving Mark Shields (the referee) a high-five! Joel Griffiths whacked the linesman in the knackers back in October and he got off with a yellow card and no further ramifications. (new link for griffith’s sack whack)

What do you think? Of the game? Of the ref? Of the Vukovic send-off?

  1. WooHoo, the Jets won.
Due to my TV having an internal HD to record on, I was able to watch the game when i got home from church.
The Jet were hungrier, and dominated possession, and tried to create something, ironically the goal came from a mistake by the most experienced player out there. At first i found the game kinda interesting, but on reflection, there wasnt really much happening.
I think the jets deserved to win, they broke down the Mariners well and played at their tempo, rather than the high pace of the Mariners.
Overall mark shields did a good job, maybe a little quick to pull cards, but it is a Grand final and discipline is needed early to keep control.
On the controversy at the end, one of the Mariners player comments in the press conference at the end got it right, “who wants to be a ref, they have got the hardest job, they only get one look and dont have the luxury of replays.’ he missed seeing the hand ball, which only flicked his hand before hitting his head (from memory)(still valid for giving a penalty).
Vukovic had a brain explosion, the emotion of the moment was too much ad he lost it. He doesn’t deserve a life ban. He deserved the Red though. Aloisi deserved his yellow for dissent too. I would be very surprised if he got a life ban, he might miss half a season or a year though. This is sad cause he is a great keeper and has been playing well, and is vital for our olyroos team as we seek to rip it up in Beijing.
    Yah the Jets won.
Oh weh oh weh oh woah
There was 30 minutes to go
    It was Bridge’s Goal
That sent them out of control
And sent mariners out the Final

  2. hey duke… You’ve got nothing legit to cheer about! Your team came 4th, they just lost to team beckham, and you can’t just jump on the newcastle bandwagon!
    Congrat sam.
I think that the red was appropriate, but don’t think he should get much more than the standard 1 or 2 match suspension.

I agree that ref is a tough job. I like that there aren’t video umpires… But maybe one day?

    Peaceout

  3. They went for a holiday, not to play football.
But since when does Renaud strike goals like the one he did against the galaxy.
I hope they never have replays, but do want goal line technology.

  4. What did Danny acutally do to the ref?
I suspect from the “life ban” calls that he hit the ref right?
Does anyone have a link to a replay showing what happen?

  5. hey, news is danny gets a 15month suspension.

also about why griffiths only got little action taken against him.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) confirmed today no more action would or could be taken against Griffiths, because the incident had been dealt with on the field of play.

World soccer’s governing body FIFA decrees that if a referee specifically deals with an incident on-field, that is the end of the matter.

The FFA confirmed Griffiths had been booked for “dissent by action” for the incident in the fourth minute of the spiteful top-of-the-table clash, tying their hands and ensuring he could not be hauled before a tribunal.

If he had been red-carded, or even if no action had been taken by the referee, Griffiths could have faced a lengthy suspension.

A red card would have opened the way for the FFA to refer the matter to its disciplinary tribunal to determine a suitable penalty, while no card at all would have allowed Griffiths to be cited.

  6. I just noticed that Sasho also hits the refs left hand just before Danny does! – Its high fives all round!
