In the Summer of 2009/2010 readers of this blog raised $1741 for a clean water project in Rwanda. Then in 2010/2011 we helped to raise $2835 for a clean water project in India. It was really exciting to see the way that $4500 could be raised via social media.
IT’S TIME TO DO IT AGAIN!
Earlier this year I was able to see firsthand the incredible way that Compassion are doing Christ-centred, child-focused and church-based work in Indonesia. You can see a summary of my blog coverage on this post.
THE PLAN THIS SUMMER? BUILD A TOILET BLOCK AND WATER TANKS AND MORE!!
The Indonesian Mission Gospel Fellowship Church began partnering with Compassion in 2009 and after almost 4 years the number of children has grown rapidly to 242. An outcome of the program for children is that they would be physically healthy, but this is difficult to achieve at the moment because of lack of access to clean water and hygienic toilets.
During the dry season the project struggles to provide clean water when children are attending the activities at the church, and there are only 2 toilets for all 242 children and 10 project staff. This Critical Intervention will construct:
- 2 sit toilets
- 2 squat toilets
- 1 septic tank
- 2 water tanks with taps.
The children will be trained in proper hygiene and sanitation, to increase their knowledge and attitudes about their health and to prevent waterborne diseases.
Here is picture of current toilets:
(And the picture at the top of this post is of a similar block built elsewhere in Indonesia)
TELL ‘EM THE PRICE, SON
I was originally thinking that we’d shoot for $5,000. However, the whole project will cost $12,300.
It might sound crazy, but I’ve said to Compassion that we will try and raise the full $12,300! I know it doesn’t work like this, but that’s only $4 for each of my Facebook “friends”. What happens to the project if we don’t raise enough money? Compassion will look elsewhere to try and fund the rest. But wouldn’t it be great if we made it!

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. (1 John 3:16-18)
Jesus has loved us radically, we are to love others radically. This isn’t the only way to show love, but it is a way. I would be stoked if you would join in on this project as a way of showing love to brothers and sisters in need.
