Black is the new Bieber
The pop culture phenomenon of the week is Rebecca Black with her new hit song “Friday”. Black is being likened to teenage super-pop-star Justin Bieber. It went from 2000 hits to 25million hits just this week!! Perhaps Black is the new Bieber? Anyway, you decide:
Sometimes modern pop lyrics are hard to understand. Not in this track. They are simple, yet profound. Her observations on life are quite insightful.
It’s only March, but this song is well on its way to ‘song of the year’. Triple thumbs up ;)
No more fear in death
This is a killer video. I’ve posted it twice before. Here it is again for new readers.
The old skool preacher sampled in this vid is Billy Graham. He has preached Jesus to a trillion people. I recently worked out that I became a Christian through someone who became a Christian under the ministry of someone who became a Christian from Billy’s preaching in 1959. Make sense? Pretty cool. I probably won’t get to meet Billy this side of eternity (though I have met his grandson) but I might hear him preaching Jesus in heaven.

To Live is Christ by Trip Lee
Check out the following vid from Trip Lee. It’s based on Philippians. It’s from a Reach Records project/album thirteen letters – each track summarises one of Paul’s thirteen letters from the New Testament of the Bible. Might help as you teach young punks.

Jesus in Every Book of the Bible
We’re getting our Biblical Theology on at Next Gen this week as we learn from Malachi in Strand 2. Duke and I played this video to our group. It’s a young punk speaking about how Jesus is in every book of the Bible. Pretty cool stuff. Check it:
There’s probably some I’d say differently, but lots of them are really helpful in showing Christ in all the scriptures. What do you think?
You’re not the King, I’m the King!
The illustration I’ve used more than any other with youth and children to illustrate sin is from a 2000 Burger King commercial. It features Queensland (give toward the floods here) Rugby League legend Wally Lewis. I watched it for the first time today for over 10 years. Poetic license means that my retelling of the commercial is a little embellished, maybe more exciting and definitely longer than the original product!
Talk 4 from this series is the most recent time I’ve given it. Basically the red-headed fella in the ad sits next to King Wally Lewis, with a whopper in hand, and declares that Wally isn’t the king, but that he is the king. I compare it to what we have all done in waving our puny little fists at God and declaring that he’s not the king.
The heart of sin is our rebellion against God and attempt to rule our own lives as if he is God. This is dumb, and there’s consequences. If this is all new to you, check out what Jesus has done to deal with your sin and re-establish his rule.
All good illustrations are stolen, so if you like, go ahead! (I think I first stole it from Marty Kemp back on The Real Thing in 2000/2001… haha!)
Rerun: Beached Whale
I’m currently preaching at a youth conference in New Zealand with a lovely bunch of young punks. The talks and the vibe of the camp are going really well. A bit of a giggle has been had on account of my Aussie accent, but I’m equally having a giggle at their Kiwi accent. Except I’m clearly in the minority, so they win! Beached As Whale has been linked before, but I thought I’d give it a rerun! (Warning: the seagull uses the ‘S’ bomb)
The dudes that made the above viral video have made millions! They keep selling a stack of merch and hooked up a deal to make more animations for ABC TV. I haven’t seen any of the other episodes, but there’s a stack of them on youtube.
Yesu Azali Awa – Esalaik String Band
One of my highlights of Vanuatu 2010 was a rather boisterous sing-a-long to and from our kayaking adventure. The kayaking was slightly sketchy: bad kayaks; risky conditions; overpriced; and lame sharks to feed. That didn’t matter. The trip was worth it. String Bands are a popular form of music in Vanuatu. We enjoyed listening to the Esalaik String Band on the bus. In one of the songs we recognised some of the lyrics and began to sing along. The bus driver liked this. So he kept repeating the track.
After both legs of the journey, we probably sang the song over 50 times!! The song was called Yesu Azali Awa – which I think means ‘Jesus is my Lord’. The chorus basically repeats the line ‘Hallelujah Jesus’ over and over again. And so we repeated it over and over again! So much fun.

OK Go – White Knuckles – Official Video
Those creative cats from OK Go – the band that unleashed their dancing skills on YouTube in 2006 with that treadmill film clip receiving over 50million views – have done it again. Earlier this year they redefined ‘paint fight’ with This Too Shall Pass; now they have produced another well choreographed dance routine – this time involving some clever canines and some swanky furniture. Here it is:

This… is the Internet
Ed Springer and his team of leaders are doing a great job with Club Reg, the junior high youth ministry of Northmead Anglican Church. I hung out with them on Friday night and spoke about the internet and social media to both the youth group members and their parents. Lots of parents came. It was a useful night to run and a great way to connect with parents who aren’t part of the church.
