Asian Cup Socceroos

The Asian Cup is almost here. It’s going to be big! Last year during the World Cup it was easy to make time to watch the games: it was played in Germany so it meant I only needed to miss sleep to watch games. With the Asian Cup being played in our time zone it makes things a bit trickier…

  • Australia vs Oman Sunday July 8 5:20pm. I’ll be on a bus going to the snow.
  • Iraq vs Australia Friday July 13 5:20pm. I think I’ll be in a leaders meeting or speaking on camp!
  • Thailand vs Australia Monday July 16 7:35pm. This one should be okay!

My tip. If Australia can deal with the heat, they’ll win. Lucas Neill needs to command the back line bettr than their last game against Singapore. Harry Kewell will remain injury free and score a bag of goals. Jason Cullina will be Australia’s player of the tournament.

My other tip. Having the Socceroos part of the Asian Football Federation will be bigger than soccer. Their involvement will have a significant economic, political and diplomatic impact on Australia’s relationship with Asia.

Keep an eye on twg and ewg for all the up-to-date news.

  1. Thanks dave for letting me know exactly when the games are on. SBS or Fox?

Yes, the heat could be a problem. So could our defence.

I think I preferred going in as the underdog and not favourites!

  2. Dave, i think the times listed on TWG are the local times and therefore the game with start approx 3-4 hours later than those times, I recall seeing an ad of fox for the first Aussie game and the telecast started at 8:30. So you may enjoy seeing some Socceroo action.

  3. I also have bad news for those SBS fans (i.e. those w/o Fox) It will only be telecast on Fox not sbs, i checked the TV Guide. Thats pretty lame, but SBS does have le Tour de France on starting on Sunday.

  4. I’m led to believe that with the present FIFA rankings, Australia are only the third-ranked team behind Iran and Japan. Mind you, the FIFA ranking system is an absolute joke.

Most relieved about the games starting at 8:30 instead of 5:30 so that I can make church commitments and see the game. I reckon I’ll be out of the door as soon as the service ends though!

  5. so it looks like the times i wrote are about 2 hours too early…

    good stuff…

underdogs is a better way to go in.

    rankings are a bit silly.

    go the socceroos

  6. I am going for the Soccoroos, obviously because England aren’t playing.

Looking forward to it but disappointed it isn’t on SBS ;(
