Bible Reading Plan

I started a new Bible reading plan this morning. Basically I am alternating between the NT and OT each morning. Today I started by reading a chunk of Matthew and tomorrow I plan on reading a chunk of Genesis and so on. There are 3 things that make this Bible reading different from what I’ve done before:

  1. I read standing up (won’t fall asleep)
  2. I read out loud (avoid mental drift)
  3. I’m recording them as mp3s.

I’m recording them so that I can listen to them while driving or walking or running (probably not swimming) or whatever. The plan is to maybe have recorded the whole Bible by the end of the year??? We’ll see how we go.

I think it’s good to do different things when reading the Bible. Sometimes I might spend ages reflecting on a few verses. But I think it’s time for the Big Picture of the whole Bible.

What do you think of my new plan?

  1. Hi David. I like the idea. I pray that you will grow in Christlikeness as you read the Bible. See you soon.

  2. I am currently reading through the bible from beginning to end (ie Genesis through to Revelation). Just finished reading Acts this morning. It’s quite an amazing way to get an idea of God’s greater plan for this world. Reading through the OT in order, and then on to the NT also makes it so clear that Jesus is THE ONLY WAY, and that this was always planned for it to be this way.

I love the idea of recording your readings as you go. I have been toying with the idea of doing that for the past year or so – it is so hard to find a good edition of the bible on tape / CD / mp3 in an Australian accent! If it works out perhaps you should make it available to others…

  3. I think this is a great idea. I often myself standing up and walking around when I’m reading. And don’t forget that St Ambrose was considered unusual in AD 400 because he could read without moving his lips – reading aloud has a long and venerable tradition.

Having said that, I find it very difficult to read large of Scripture. A few verses, and I’m already exploring and meditating and/or getting distracted and going off on a tangent…

So I don’t follow a read-the-whole-Bible plan. I read it book by book, at varying pace. At the moment I’m reading Psalms and Job.

  4. cj – great to hear of your encouragement in reading through the Bible. i think the only problem with making them available would be the copyright factor.

john – that st ambrose certainly sounds like an crazy fella! i struggle to take things in reading in my head… so out loud might be slower… but good to digest!

  5. dave, that sounds awesome! i have lately been reading the bible in bed, and am finding myself fighting the eyelids… so i think i need to re-asses my way of reading.
yea i love the idea of recording the bible, i would love to get a copy of it too..
its great to hear of you reading, it encourages me to really dig into God’s word more and be much more discipline.

  6. reading in bed is crazy hard!
i’ve done okay with reading other books of late in bed… but when it comes to reading the bible in my head… zzzzzz…

pretty much anytime i lie down i will fall asleep within a couple of minutes.

i read gen 1-11 this morning… wasn’t super early… like 830am!… but iwas struggling to stay with it even though i was standing, doing it out loud… and enjoying it!

  7. recording them was stupid and took too much time to worry about doing it.

one of the ways i avoid mental drift is listen to it on my iPod and following along with my eyes. often i do it with 2 different translations. i always listen with NIV and normal follow in Greek with NT and follow in ESV with OT.

here’s my 2009 bible reading plan:

i’ve generally kept up with it – but there’s been times when i’ve focused more on what we’ve been doing at college – and other times i’ve been slack…

  8. Thanks for this! I’ve been reading over at the Brainwave Entrainment Forums, and viewing this post was the ideal confirmation for much of the info I discovered. :)
