Davis, Henderson, Mayfield + Winehouse

I got some new music from JB Hifi on Thursday night. I had a $40 gift voucher and picked up 4 CDs from Miles, Joe, Curtis + Amy.

  1. Miles DavisKind of Blue: This CD is incredible. Chris got it for me for my 21st birthday, but it was stolen (we think) sometime in the last year. It’s considered to be one of the greatest Jazz albums of all time and Rolling Stone had it at #12 on their 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
  2. Joe HendersonPage One: This was a reasonably random purchase. I was deciding between this one and a couple of other Jazz albums – and I chose this one because I liked the cover. It’s an awesome CD!!
  3. Curtis MayfieldThe Very Best Of: About 10 years ago I heard a Curtis Mayfield song on the radio and wrote his name on my steering wheel so that I wouldn’t forget to look up more of his works. It’s taken 10 years – but The Very Best of Curtis Mayfield is very cool. He has a similar sound to Marvin Gaye. Soul, R&B, Funk.
  4. Amy WinehouseFrank: This is her debut album from 2003. Winehouse smashes out some killer R&B, Soul and Jazz tracks.

  1. Is the mastering of the first Amy Winehouse disc as distorted as the current one? I can’t listen to it for more than 2 tracks at a time without my ears bleeding.

  2. dan – do you have ‘frank’?

michelle – i don’t have BOTC. but i’ve been digging KOB since having it again!
glad i helped make your day! what other stuff have you been listening to lately?

AJ – i haven’t listened to it much on iPod yet, it’s been mainly in the car. so the ears haven’t bled yet… it sounds pretty good quality… but you’ve probably got a better ear for discerning quality of mastering!!

  3. It’s very high quality – it’s just deliberately distorted to give that “authentic warm soul vibe”. Which is great for about 2 tracks before it gets a bit painful.

  4. ah ok – well this has an authentic warm soul vibe (didn’t know that was related to mastering!).

-there’s one track with a club, glasses chinking sound to it.
-another with a romantic cricket sounding night time feel.

is it a bit of the vinyl record type of sound?

  5. maybe vinyl from 1913!

Rich is far more the expert, but to me it sounds more like they’ve run everything deliberately way too hot onto reel to reel tape or a tube compressor or something. It’s a cool technique, because analogue circuits don’t distort like digital (it breaks up more warm and fuzzy). In fact we’re hoping to record our whole next album on tape.

But there’s warm and then there’s ouchie!! This is ouchie!

  6. But there’s warm and then there’s ouchie!! This is ouchie!

    haha

In fact we’re hoping to record our whole next album on tape.

very cool. when is it due out? from memory you said you were writing for much of the year and recording by the end of the year?? look forward to hearing some tracks.

  7. we’ve booked a studio for jan 09. So Should be out early next year. Right when I come and join you guys (God willing) at college.

just meeting with the producer on thursday – he’s got a couple of aria awards under his belt so we’re pretty stoked he’s on board.

  8. “They” stole Miles! That is disappointing, but at least the thief had good music taste. I suppose in the age of music pirates we have to expect this kind of thing.

  9. row would rather the musical pirates steal all my 90’s rnb boy bands – i think most robbers have better taste!!

while on the subject of quality music (miles not the 90’s boys), how is ‘the wild frontier’ going? any gigs coming soon??

  10. The bass players wife recently had a baby so we have had a bit of time off from gigs. But we are looking at making a new record soon. We have a bunch of new songs which I am excited about.
Will probably start doing gigs again in Sept this year and hoepfully have a new record in early 2009.

Speaking of the 90’s, I was listening to Roxette the other day – they had it going on (for at least two songs).
