Does God love me?

Fitting in. It’s one of the greatest desires of every teenager. That’s why teenagers form into sub-cultural groupings (emo, surfer, skater, computer nerds, rugby boys, war hammer club, North Shore Princess, mountain goats, wannabe gangsters, etc…) so that they can fit in. Teenagers will sometimes do stupid things so that they can be liked. All people just want to be accepted and ultimately to be loved.

How do you know someone loves you? And the most important question any person can ask – HOW DO I KNOW GOD LOVES ME? The Bible says with certainty that God loves us. God doesn’t just say it, but he shows it:

  • “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Rom 5:8) How has God shown that he loves us? It was when we were at our worst (ungodly, powerless, God’s enemies, sinners) that God gave us his best. Jesus died for us when we sucked. Jesus loved us when we were unlovely. The cross of Jesus is God’s way of showing that he loves us.
  • “God made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Cor 5:21) At the cross God deals with our two problems. Sin and righteousness: We’ve got sin – we need to get rid of it; We don’t got righteousness – we need to get it. Jesus, the sinless one, becomes sin for us and we, the righteousnessless ones, are given the righteousness of God. Martin Luther called it the great transfer. At the cross, our sin is transferred to Jesus and his righteousness is transferred to us.

Do you know that God loves you? Look to the cross.

Do you doubt that God loves you? Look to the cross.

Do you forget that God loves you? Look to the cross.

  1. Look to the cross. I like it.

Have also been reflecting lately upon the fact that God’s discipline (Heb 12:6, Prov 3:12) is a tangible expression of God’s love and acceptance.

  2. When dealing with this I’ve always found Romans 5:8, as you’ve already posted, is the best.

The other thing I’ve found is that before or after they ask if God loves them they will usually ask whether they know they can be saved or not. Romains 10:9 is all I’ve ever needed for that.
