We spent 4 hours in the car today travelling. One of the games we played was which 3 business would you like to own & run. The aim wasn’t to make lots of money, but rather something you’d be interested in operating. It was fun. Feel free to share yours.
Dave’s List:
- Cafe – I like the coffee thing, but probably more so the people thing.
- Shoe Shop – during high school and my first few years out of school I worked in a sport shop. I like shoes. The shoe shop would specialise in sports shoes and casual/urban/street shoes.
- Creative Suite – web/graphic design, marketing, advertising, PR etc.
Row’s List:
- Florist – even though she’s allergic to grass, she likes flowers. That’s cool. (Mental note: buy row flowers)
- Travel Agent – not just the opportunity to travel, but help people plan sweet trips.
- Art House Cinema – operating an independent cinema. A little bit like the one at Avoca Beach (if you haven’t been there… make the trip one day/night)
If I could run a business…
1. Indie Gig Venue – I feel as if there aren’t many opportunities on the beaches for music to happen in small venues. Possibly an all ages venue too.
2. Surf Shop – I wanted to work in one during one of my college breaks, didn’t happen though.
3. Motorsport Team – I love to drive, would be fun to race cars and all that goes with it.
cool idea.
1. Underground Jazz / Snooker Club
2. Music Tuition School
3. Homeless Shelter
duke – i wouldn’t have guessed the motorsport one for you. i would have guessed the other two. this is a cool question to get to know people better!
joelpj – i could see you doing all of those. love the snooker element for the underground jazz. maybe the jazz musos could play snooker on stage whule they play their instruments???
My list would be…
1. Bookshop – I love books.
2. Second-hand bookshop – might be more interesting with rare/old books.
3. Cafe – maybe.
I might actually prefer a second-hand bookshop to just a bookshop.
tim – i reckon you combine all of those into one.
a cafe with new and used books!!!
1. Photography/photographic tours: It would be great to make money from doing something fun, and a couple of times a year run travel tours that focus specifically on getting to awesome places to shoot!
2: Boffee shop (stolen from my wife) is the combination of books & coffee. The books would be mostly second hand & people could trade in a book & get free coffee vouchers, read books for free in store, or buy them to take home! Overstuffed couches would be obligatory.
3: Niche food critic: I always thought it would be interesting critiquing fast food & pub food around NSW. I love the psychology of service & looking at how little changes in manner or style can affect the way people feel welcomed or encouraged. I also think when people seek excellence, even if their job is assembling quarter pounders, it makes a huge difference. It sounds silly, but I get a buzz every time some dude centres the cheese on my burger properly!
Can you guess from the length of my responses, that I too have thought about this stuff?
tim
always good to have some back up plans!!
from reading your blog, i’m not surprised from your 3 ideas.
thanks for sharing!
