More sex, more booze, more toys

According to a survey (h/t CraigS), teenagers are getting more sex, more booze and more toys. Drugs and smoking aren’t as popular. The survey shows teens are wealthier and more materialistic.

The results seem to be consistent with my observations of local teenagers. Some of the young guys I’ve met through the gym and high school scripture are very serious about their health (they want to look hot) and staying clear from drugs – yet they like hooking up with chicks and drinking beer – preferably at the same time! Likewise everyone has an iPod, an Xbox 360, a PlayStation 3 and a boxed set of their 10 favourite TV shows.

I was never allowed to get a gameboy. I’m glad. I think my parents helped me not to be as materialistic as I could be…

  1. Interesting that when you get older you appreciate your parents actions more (well in some cases).

I was never allowed a gameboy either, and we always had a crappy TV and video machine. My parents didn’t see that as a priority. I on the other hand thought that they were stingy and very uncool.

All is forgiven now, expect for their refusal to get me a Castle Greyskull set and a winged-skateboard. Maybe Eve will deliver where they failed.

  2. well in some case
i won’t tell them – but for me pretty much ALL cases!!

i desperately wanted the full 45cm plus Vultron – never got it… i got this dicky little one about 8cm.

but i’ve still got it on my desk now!!

hope that Eve delivers!! maybe for Christmas?

  3. Interesting survey…

I’m only 8 years removed from youth and the prevailing trend in my peers then was drugs. Speed, E’s and pot were consumed way more than alcohol.

I wonder how much influence the ‘health’ craze has on the drug industry…
Maybe soon it will wipe alcohol off the market? Something will obviously replace it.. I wonder what?

It is funny how parents get close but seem to miss the mark.

I always wanted a remote control car. They did get me one, but it was one of those ones that have a cord running from the controls to the car. Not exactly what I was after.

  5. the health craze is an interesting one.

back in my day – i hung out with fit people cos i played sport… but gyms are now chockers with young whippets and there’s a mantra of ‘get buff or bust’

  6. remote control car – very funny.
it’s not really a remote control when you’ve got to be so close to the car!!

good call on the protein shakes!!
