Structure of 1 Corinthians

I’ve got an exam on 1 Corinthians on Monday. Here is a PDF of Ciampa & Rosner’s structure for 1 Corinthians (from a forthcoming commentary). It’s in the shape of a cross, not aiming to be tacky, just memorable. Hopefully some will find it helpful.

Not one of my class mates? Not really interested in the structure of 1 Corinthians? Start reading it here and/or check out the following sermons on the book:

  1. Here’s a few question marks for me:

    1. Do the problems with analysing 1Cor from a Gr-Rom literary point of view more show how silly literary analysis gets, rather than then need to interpret it through another grid?

    2. The flee/honour verses are not noticeably central, structural markers to me.

    3. The lawsuits stuff doesn’t fit neatly, and doesn’t get explained neatly.

    4. I’m a bit over the conviction that NT writers has detailed and totally brilliantly cohesive structures for their books.

    5. 1Cor 8-14 seems to be about a range of diverse issues, and it seems misrepresentative to see the primary issue in 8-10 as fleeing idolatry.

    6. Breaking off chapter 4 at verse 17 kind of annoys me.

    1. I wrote my dissertation on 1 Cor 12–14. I learned that the issue with 1 Cor 8-14 is not merely idolatry, there are other bigger issues as well
