// TAKE COUNSEL OF THE GOSPEL

INSTAGRAM YO

#MartinLuther:

“Here I must take counsel of the gospel. I must hearken to the gospel, which teacheth me, not what I ought to do, (for that is the proper office of the law), but what Jesus Christ the Son of God hath done for me: to wit, that He suffered and died to deliver me from sin and death. The gospel willeth me to receive this, and to believe it. And this is the truth of the gospel. It is also the principal article of all Christian doctrine, wherein the knowledge of all godliness consisteth. Most necessary it is, therefore, that we should know this article well, teach it unto others, and beat it into their heads continually.”

// BUSY ACTIVE MIGHTY FAITH

#MartinLuther in his preface to #Romans:

“O it is a living, busy active mighty thing, this faith. It is impossible for it not to be doing good things incessantly. It does not ask whether good works are to be done, but before the question is asked, it has already done this, and is constantly doing them. Whoever does not do such works, however, is an unbeliever. He gropes and looks around for faith and good works, but knows neither what faith is nor what good works are. Yet he talks and talks, with many words, about faith and good works.”

Is Grace Alone still worth fighting for?

Happy Reformation Day! This past weekend was ‘Reformation Sunday’ and in God’s providence it coincided with Ephesians 2 in our current sermon series at St Faith’s Narrabeen. In my sermon I gave a very brief overview of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation with particular reference to the doctrine of GRACE ALONE. Grace Alone was important in the 15th Century. Is it still worth fighting for today? That’s the question I raised. Have a listen to my sermon below to see what I concluded from Ephesians 2.

Here is the Reformation Sunday Ephesians 2 sermon outline:

GRACE ALONE
WHY IS GRACE ALONE STILL WORTH FIGHTING FOR?
1) THE NEED FOR GRACE
(What we once were… Ephesians 2:1-3 & Ephesians 2:11-12)
2) THE WORK OF GRACE
(What Christ has done… Ephesians 2:4-9 & Ephesians 2:13-18
3) THE RESULT OF GRACE
(What we have become… Ephesians 2:10 & Ephesians 2:19-22)
EMBRACE GRACE

Reformation Day – Confidence

Happy Reformation Day! October 31 is a significant day in the history of the Gospel and God’s work in the world. It’s got nothing to do with Halloween, but it does have something to do with people knocking on doors! I liked this quote this morning from my friend on twitter: “31/10 – Kids knock on doors asking for treats. 31/10 – Martin Luther knocks on Church door asking for Reform”. On October 31, 1517, the young monk Martin Luther nailed his ‘95 Theses‘ to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany.

That document outlined a number of concerns he had with some specific problems within the Roman Catholic church of his time. His goal in the first instance was to reform the church, but in the end it was the spark that lead to the Protestant Reformation.

One of the legacies of Luther and the Reformation for Christians today is confidence.

Martin Luther on Romans

Lots of Romans coming up. Sweeeeeet. Here’s what an old school monk said about it:

“This letter is truly the most important piece in the New Testament. It is purest Gospel. It is well worth a Christian’s while not only to memorise it word for word but also to occupy himself with it daily, as though it were the daily bread of the soul. It is impossible to read or to meditate on this letter too much or too well. The more one deals with it, the more precious it becomes and the better it tastes.” (From Martin Luther’s Preface to the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans)

Get it in ya belly!
