Entermission – debut album from DJ Official – available now!

I dig the work of Reach Records (I’ve previously reviewed Tedashii’s Identity Crisis). DJ Official released a brand new album today. It’s got some legit rappers and a killer missional message. My homeboy MC Shamrock would call this album dope. Check it.

Here’s the full press release for Entermission from Reach Records:

After producing for over 10 years and serving as travelling deejay, Official finally has the opportunity to reveal the dynamic of his skill-set on one project. The album is purposed to influence Christians to think about the Great Commission (Matt 28:19) and the Great Commandment (Luke 10:27) on a local level. As Christians we have a personal mission field, which consist of those that God has placed in our sphere of influence.

JOURNEY ON – Oakbridge featuring MC Shamrock

I went out with Mark Earngey (stage name MC Shamrock) on Friday night for some live Aussie Hip-Hop. Oakbridge was launching his new album. He was supported by Hoodsta Kidd and Broadkast from Brisbane. Earngey is featured on one of the album tracks, and so he performed that song with Oakbridge. Check out the video of Journey On:

The highlight of the night was Earngey owning the stage, closely followed by Broadkast and in particular their song Stay True. Check it on MySpace or listen for it on radio soon.

Most of these guys are hooked up with the Krosswerdz crew. Peaceout homies.

Miles Davis | Kind of Blue – 50th Anniversary

I like this album. I’ve owned the album twice. Read about it here. It turns 50 today.

Herbie Hancock on Kind of Blue:

Here’s a record that I could recommend to anyone–from any country, of any age. If you want to hear the spirit of jazz, listen to Kind of Blue.

Good call Herbie. Want to become a Jazz Cat?? Check it out Amazon and in iTunes.

Bring You Praise | Trevor Hodge

Trevor Hodge has been writing praise and worship songs for over 10 years. In the past 12 months, I’ve been to a number of events where Trev has led the congregation in singing, ranging from 20 people to 400 people. In both contexts he’s effective in taking the spotlight off himself and directing it toward Jesus through uplifting songs.

Bring You Praise is a fantastic album that also directs the listener toward Jesus. The album achieves something that many others in this genre fail to achieve: emotional AND theological engagement. That is; lots of albums are brilliant musically, but lack theological richness; while other albums are theologically rich, but lack in their ability to engage emotionally.

One of the striking features of Bring You Praise is the centrality of the gospel throughout the album from beginning to end. The death, resurrection and return of Jesus are themes that are returned to again and again.

Tedashii – Identity Crisis

Confession time. I like R&B and Rap music. Yep. Boyz II Men. Tupac. Sometimes I say to people that I used to like it during high school, but the truth is, I still like it! I like the beats, the harmonies, the poetry and the jive talk. BUT I came to the point where I couldn’t listen to too much Rap music because it wasn’t the best stuff to be filling my head with. I also realised that singing along to ‘I’ll make love to you’ wasn’t the most edifying gear for me to be singing as a single Christian dude.

Tedashii | Identity Crisis

This week I’ve been listening to a rap album that’s really good AND a lot more edifying for my ears and my soul. TedashiiIdentity Crisis. The album comes out on Tuesday (American Time). Tedashii is a Christian rapper (homies with Lecrae and the Reach Records crew). Here’s the thing. Christian Rap is often C-Rap. But for Tedashii, it’s actually good. Well produced. Not lame. He’s got cred. Creative lyrics. Good beats. Great R&B loops. Sweet R&B singers. Encouraging. (I often use the word encouraging, but I’ve been really encouraged by this album!)

So much of African-American hip-hop culture is about identity. Cars. Cash. Bling. Women. Alcohol. Status. Ripped abs. Gangs. Violence. Identity Crisis is brilliant in the way it re-thinks the idea of identity for the Christian. The identity theme flows throughout the album. Created in the image of God. Fallen. Adopted. Now part of a community. The album has a clear picture of the gospel of Jesus’ death and resurrection and the new identity that belongs to those that believe in Him.

Two of my fav tracks: Hollywood which is Tedashii’s testimony; and Make War which kicks off with a snippet of a John Piper sermon about making war against sin in your life.

This album is the goods. If you’re a young Christian dude into rap – check this gear out – it’s good and will encourage you. If you’re a parent or youth leader who’s got young crew into rap, buy them the album to help them think about their identity.
