Gabriella Cilmi ‘Sweet About Me’ + ‘Sanctuary’

Gabriella Cilmi just smashed it at the ARIA’s. Some of her tunes have an Amy Winehouse-esque, very cool for a 17 year-old. Hoping her life doesn’t pan out the same way as Amy’s. Here is the youtube vid of Gabriella Cilmi ‘Sweet About Me[EDIT: they’ve just disabled embedding, click here to watch]. Here’s a different song, Sanctuary, instead:

“Melbourne’s 17-year-old Cilmi blitzed her competitors, as Australia’s music industry turned out to celebrate its best at Sydney’s Acer Arena. Cilmi took out all six of the awards she was nominated for, including best female artist, best pop release and breakthrough artist: album for her debut record Lessons to be Learned. Her smash hit Sweet About Me clinched highest-selling single, breakthrough artist: single, and single of the year.” (Read the rest)

Youthsurge & Garage Hymnal team up

Youthsurge & Garage Hymnal have teamed up to change the world in 2009. Here’s a snippet from today’s media release: Youthsurge and Garage Hymnal are teaming up to shatter conceptions of what bible-based youth ministry looks and sounds like. In 2009 the two groups are planning to raise the bar for evangelical youth events, with new programs, new sounds and a new vision.

“People seem to assume that you have to choose between great worship or great bible teaching. What we have in common with Youthsurge is that we don’t like choosing, we want it all!” says Andy Judd, keyboardist in Garage Hymnal.

Davis, Henderson, Mayfield + Winehouse

I got some new music from JB Hifi on Thursday night. I had a $40 gift voucher and picked up 4 CDs from Miles, Joe, Curtis + Amy.

  1. Miles DavisKind of Blue: This CD is incredible. Chris got it for me for my 21st birthday, but it was stolen (we think) sometime in the last year. It’s considered to be one of the greatest Jazz albums of all time and Rolling Stone had it at #12 on their 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
  2. Joe HendersonPage One: This was a reasonably random purchase. I was deciding between this one and a couple of other Jazz albums – and I chose this one because I liked the cover. It’s an awesome CD!!
  3. Curtis MayfieldThe Very Best Of: About 10 years ago I heard a Curtis Mayfield song on the radio and wrote his name on my steering wheel so that I wouldn’t forget to look up more of his works. It’s taken 10 years – but The Very Best of Curtis Mayfield is very cool. He has a similar sound to Marvin Gaye. Soul, R&B, Funk.
  4. Amy WinehouseFrank: This is her debut album from 2003. Winehouse smashes out some killer R&B, Soul and Jazz tracks.

Free Tunes

Nestle is giving out free songs on iTunes with the purchase of lollies and chocolate. I like free music! Below are the 5 I downloaded last night.

  1. Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) – Chris Tomlin
  2. Anyone Else But You – The Moldy Peaches
  3. This Heart Attack – Faker
  4. Zombie – The Cranberries
  5. Crazy – Gnarls Barkley
