10 WEBSITES/APPS TO HELP YOU HEAR THE WORD OF GOD

James chapter one shows the importance of HEARING and HEEDING the word of God. Verse 21 says to “humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.” And verse 22 challenges us to do something with what we hear, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

During my recent sermon on James 1 (you can listen to it here) I gave 5 websites/apps that can help you turn your smart phone from a distraction into a device that helps you listen to the Word of God.

Here are the 5 websites/apps I mentioned in the sermon:

Can you afford not to follow Jesus?

Some of the years 12s from our youth community recently enjoyed a week of schoolies in Forster. It included chilling, time in the bible and serving the local community. You can read a little bit about our Schoolies trip in the latest issue of Sydney Anglican’s Southern Cross magazine. This is the second year of Soulies partnering with Coast Evangelical Church. It was encouraging seeing the crew getting alongside the locals, I love seeing year 12s seeking to be a blessing to the community rather than a burden like so many other schoolies trips.

I preached at the church on Luke 14:25-35. Here is the MP3:

THE PERFECTED KINGDOM // On Location

This video was shot and produced in June 2012 for SOULIES YOUTH. There were some issues with exporting and it was never shown. There are still issues with the sound and quality of output – but reading breathtaking sections of Jesus from the book of Revelation is good regardless of production quality!! It was shot on locations around Sydney.

This was part 8 in a series of talks called “GOD’S BIG PICTURE” based on Vaughan Robert’s outlines in this book. Music: The Revelation of Jesus Christ by Ghost Ship. Used by permission, marshill.com/music.

Is Grace Alone still worth fighting for?

Happy Reformation Day! This past weekend was ‘Reformation Sunday’ and in God’s providence it coincided with Ephesians 2 in our current sermon series at St Faith’s Narrabeen. In my sermon I gave a very brief overview of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation with particular reference to the doctrine of GRACE ALONE. Grace Alone was important in the 15th Century. Is it still worth fighting for today? That’s the question I raised. Have a listen to my sermon below to see what I concluded from Ephesians 2.

Here is the Reformation Sunday Ephesians 2 sermon outline:

GRACE ALONE
WHY IS GRACE ALONE STILL WORTH FIGHTING FOR?
1) THE NEED FOR GRACE
(What we once were… Ephesians 2:1-3 & Ephesians 2:11-12)
2) THE WORK OF GRACE
(What Christ has done… Ephesians 2:4-9 & Ephesians 2:13-18
3) THE RESULT OF GRACE
(What we have become… Ephesians 2:10 & Ephesians 2:19-22)
EMBRACE GRACE

Listen to Jesus the Glorious Son // Sermon

In Matthew 17, just after Jesus’ identity and mission has been made clear in chapter 16, Jesus takes Peter, James and John up a mountain. While up there, and in the presence of Moses and Elijah (hectic!), Jesus was transfigured before them. I preached on this mountain-top experience across the weekend at St Faith’s. Download the sermon below this 1594 artwork.

What will help you to share Jesus?

Many Christians feel weak and inadequate when it comes to sharing Jesus. They know that they should, but often lack boldness to proclaim the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Does that sound like your experience? If so, what will help you to take little steps to start sharing him? What’s this got to do with the bacon & egg roll?

I recently preached at St Faith’s on 2 Corinthians 4. It’s a chapter that can be a great encouragement in proclaiming Jesus. I hope it’s an encouragement for you too.

Here is the structure of the sermon:

We all proclaim gospels
2 Corinthians 4
1) Don’t forget the simplicity of the gospel (2 Corinthians 4:1-6)
2) Don’t forget that the power belongs to God (2 Corinthians 4:7-12)
3) Don’t forget God’s Big Picture (2 Corinthians 4:13-18)

Sermon on Hosea 1-3

At St Faith’s (and Soulies) we are in the middle of a Bible overview series based on the structure from Vaughan Roberts’ book GOD’S BIG PICTURE (which itself is based on Graeme Goldsworthy’s framework). Here is a summary of the whole book. This past weekend I preached on Hosea 1-3 in part 5 of the series ‘The Prophesied Kingdom’.

Some really heavy going content on sin and judgement, but some amazing glimpses of hope and restoration through King David’s greater Son.

Here is the structure of the sermon:

Context
1) The Story of Hosea is a Story of Judgement (Hosea 1:1-2:1)
2) God’s Punishment on Israel’s Unfaithfulness (Hosea 2:2-13)
3) What the Faithful God does to Woo Back His Wicked Bride (Hosea 2:14-3:5)
The PRICE has been PAID; Take the HAND of the HUSBAND; and CLING to the KING.
