Mixing Religion and Politics // Federal election in Australia this Saturday. How should Christians approach voting? See John Dickson’s article on how Christians should and shouldn’t approach voting.

Assessing Christian election guides // While thinking through how you should and shouldn’t vote, you may want to check out some of the Christian election guides. Sandy Grant has comprehensively assessed the relative merits of the 4 Christian issues voting guides. Find it on the briefing website.

I Forgot My Phone // This youtube video has been doing the rounds for the last couple of days. Guilty! Big challenge is to be with the people you’re with and get off your smart phone! Is this your experience?

Review: Do you feel called by God? Rethinking the call to ministry // Ben Pfahlert reviews Michael Bennett’s newish book on the call to ministry. Pfahlert – who incidentally has a very onomatopoeic last name – gives a good summary of the book and agrees with its conclusions. I haven’t read the book, but agree with the theology in his conclusion. I think using the calling terminology to ministry is unhelpful and doesn’t actually reflect the Bible’s use of ‘the call’. In the bible, ‘the call’ to all Christians is to 1) become a Christian and 2) grow in holiness. Check out the article if you’ve ever questioned whether you’ve been called into ministry – or a certain ministry – and if need be get hold of the book to perhaps correct your thinking.

Infogr.am // Ever wanted to make an attractive looking info graphic? Not sure how? Infogr.am could be the answer! I’m hoping to give it a go in the lead up to speaking at National Youth Ministry Convention later in the year.

The Digital Puritan // Last week at an Anglican ministers conference we heard Mark Dever speak on the life of Richard Sibbes. I discovered this excellent resource – The Digital Puritan – that has a wealth of material from that period. Lots is free, and other material is only a couple of bucks. Worth a browse for some encouragement by some old dead guys.

We wouldn’t treat animals the way we treat refugees // No-one is suggesting that there is a simple solution to deal appropriately with people seeking asylum in Australia. However at the moment – at least among my friends – there is a consensus that both sides of Australian politics could be more compassionate. This article from Julian Burnside in the Guardian suggests that both Labour and the Coalition are presenting cruel policies. What do you think?

SNIPPETY // Judd + Breivik + Schofield + Angrybirds + Hawkins + Schwarze

Sacrifice and Submission // Andy and Stephanie Judd were featured in a good short video on SMH across the weekend about a word change to the Anglican marriage vows. I think it’s a good change. Kelly Burke doesn’t and she rolled out some usual anti Sydney Anglican suspects who also disagree. Some good follow up letters from friends and colleagues here. Julia Baird then followed that up with an opinion piece yesterday. With some good follow up letters today too. Kelly Burke has another article in the SMH today suggesting that a word change could be in violation of the marriage act… ironic considering the push from the gay-marriage lobby to totally redefine marriage! Some good commentary on all these issues from John Sandeman; Sandy Grant; and Lionel Windsor. I understand there are more media spots to come in days to come, stay tuned… EDIT 29AUG12: Archbishop Peter Jensen has an article in today’s SMH.

Life Is Cheap in Norway: C. S. Lewis on the Sentence of Anders Breivik // Anders Breivik’s sentence for killing 77 people in Norway on July 22, 2011 is outrageous. He was deemed sane and sentenced to serve 21 years in prison “in a three-cell suite of rooms equipped with exercise equipment, a television and a laptop.” That’s 100 days of posh prison time for each person he murdered, with a legal release possible at age 53. Life is cheap in Norway. John Piper pulls together some C.S. Lewis quotes to discuss the relationship of mercy to justice.

Edge of the abyss // “Michael Schofield thought his young daughter, Janni, was a genius, until he realised her bright mind masked an inner darkness.” A moving story…

Dads create children’s app empire // Outsourcing win.

THE TIME I DANCED FOR 24 HOURS // I don’t know Josh Hawkins, but we’ve got a number of mutual friends. He makes some pretty zany vids. Check out this one where he wins a 24hour dancing competition.

These Infinite Spaces // It happened a month ago, but I only just noticed that Craig Schwarze is blogging again. Check out his site. He was one of the top Sydney Christian blog dogs for many years. Welcome back.

SNIPPETY // Same-Sex Marriage + Free Music Ethics + Nalbandian + Fairfax

Stylish same-sex campaign glosses over real issues // Our Archbishop Peter Jensen had a great article in the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday. Read it here. Also you can read a letter that he sent out to all the Anglican Churches in Sydney during the past week. Snippet from the letter “It will help however if in the near future Christians who wish to stand for marriage, as instituted by God, would thoughtfully and courteously let their views be known to their Federal parliamentary representatives. We should speak up for the sake of love.”

Do you enjoy free music on SPOTIFY/GROOVESHARK? // I haven’t actually read this letter yet, but some musician friends have been sharing it. I’m bookmarking it for later reading as I’m interested in thinking through the ethics of subscription music services and their impact on artists. Read it. After I read it, I might leave a comment below.

David Nalbandian is a knuckle head // Did you see him kick line judge in the Queen’s Club tennis final? Watch it here. Read about it here. If Danny Vukovic got a 1 year ban for this hi 5 with the ref in 2008, then Nalbadian ought to get at least 5 years if not life.

Fairfax to shed 1900 staff, erect paywalls // Big changes at Fairfax announced yesterday. Read about it here. Over the last 10 years old media sources have struggled to grapple with new media. These changes from Fairfax are essential! Seth Godin has been talking about the need for old media to get with the program or die on his blog for a long time.

SNIPPETY // Gay Marriage + Lingerie Football + Sex Talks + The Road Trip

The modern marriage ideology // Moore College Ethics lecturer Andrew Cameron weighs in with another thoughtful piece on how to think through the current issues and proposed redefinition of marriage by the gay and lesbian lobby. I appreciate the way that Andrew engages (and doesn’t engage) in the public sphere. CHECK IT.

Lingerie Football League // Melinda Tankard Reist has some articles worth reading about this new ‘sport’ on the block. Article 1: Abused, called pussy and told to “pancake the shit out of her”: my experience of Lingerie Football League try outs in Sydney last week. Article 2: A sad day for all women in sport: Deborah Malcolm reports on weekend’s Lingerie Football League game. Want to do something about it? Check out the Collective Shout campaign. Language and Adult Themes Warning. Under 15? Check with your mum/dad.

Ben and Emma Pfahlert on talking about sex with your kids // We haven’t formulated a plan yet. We probably should. Ben and Emma advocate a frank and open approach from a young age. Article 1: Three things we want our kids to know about sex. Article 2: The sex talk we gave to our kids.

The Road Trip that Changed the World: The Unlikely Theory that will Change How You View Culture, the Church, and, Most Importantly, Yourself // Rowena and I have been reading through Mark Sayers‘ latest (very long-titled) book. We’re only half way through, but it’s brilliant. Get it! Amazon // Kindle // Book Depository (affiliate links).
