Lamentations was written by the prophet Jeremiah around the time of the Babylonians doing the smack down on Jerusalem in about 587BC. It’s a lament where Jeremiah mourns the horror of the destruction.
This small book contains some of the heaviest and most tragic verses in all of scripture. Yet in the midst of great pain and anguish are some incredible verses about the faithfulness of God. Check out Lamentations 3:19-26…
19 I remember my affliction and my wandering,
the bitterness and the gall.20 I well remember them,
and my soul is downcast within me.21 Yet this I call to mind
and therefore I have hope:22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.”25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;26 it is good to wait quietly
for the salvation of the LORD. (NIV)
What a great hope we have! Although it would have been hard for Jeremiah to see God’s faithfulness at the time, we are indeed privileged readers of the Bible. We live in the AD… this side of the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, such that we know that God is working in all things for our good, making us more like His Son (Romans 8:28-29).
Pray for Christians in Burma and China that, in the midst of crap, they would “…hold unswervingly to the hope [they] profess, for he who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23)
