Gluttony is a sin. I’m prone to losing self-control and being a glutton. I need to repent of this sin. I do love food… but sometimes my love of food takes over!! But I do think that you can love food without being gluttonous.
So what have I done?
I set a target at the start of November to lose 15kgs by Christmas – I have already lost 7 with 8 to go over the next month. I am doing more exercise and praying that I would be reminded of what holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
If I lost 15kgs, there would be absolutely nothing left of me. That being said, just because I’m thin doesn’t mean i’m not a glutton. I can eat too much too – it just doesn’t show – weight isn’t the only indicator…
It’s good to see this issue being given coverage. I’d just like to ask – what changes have you made? Are you not eating between meals, eating less at meals, or eating better meals? I could do with a little penance myself and would love your advice.
Just make sure you don’t overdo it though – not to discourage your motivation, but are you sure it’s healthy to be losing 2kg per week?
I lost 10kg in one week once, but don’t recomend it. 2kg in a week is easy. A F1 driver probably looses 2kg in one race. It becomes a fun hobbie when you can see the scales move a bit everyday. But you can get light headed and loose concentration with low blood sugar, in which case just grab and sandwich.
I am a caffeine glutton, I really need to do something about that. I find it tough though…
Dave – can you give a brief outline for your “gluttony is sin” argument?
My understanding is that it’s one of Dante’s “7 deadly” sins. However I’ve never read Dante, so I’ve no idea where he finds support for this idea.
Daniel, gluttony is identified as a sin in Proverbs – 23:2, 23:21 & 28:7. It’s also mentioned in a negative context in Titus 1:12.
samr – 15 kgs isn’t much for a big person like me!!! i’m not super-fat or anything – just big!

if energy input = 2000KJ
and energy output = 2000KJ
Your weight will remain balanced.
so what i’m doing is cutting back on the kilojoules (calories for american readers) and increasing energy output. so i’m having some special milksaheks and eating stuff with super low KJ’s. i try to have them twice a day plus a normal meal – depending on if we are going to someone’s house or having someone over etc.
i’m not too worried about overdoing – 2kgs isn’t much for a big guy – and i think my weight has always fluctuated – so 2 isn’t super-heaps.
