I like Jazz. Last night, the Richard Maegraith Band made some sweet Jazz! It was the launch of ‘Free Running‘. Gary Daley played the Fender Rhodes to perfection. Jonathon Zwartz ran free on double bass. Tim Firth smashed it on drums. Kristin Berardi scat subliminal sounds. And Richard owned the floor on tenor sax. Enjoy the bootleg:
Why do people get glory? Because of who they are and/or what they’ve done. A politician or monarch or employer will get glory because of who they are. A successful athlete or cure-finding scientist or trophy-winning chef will get glory because of what they’ve done.
Why does God deserve all glory? It’s because of who he is AND what he has done.
I’m looking forward to Mark Driscoll’s visit to Australia in August 2008. Driscoll speaks about Jesus more than most preachers and I’m thankful to God for the way He has worked through him in Seattle and more broadly through the internet.
I’ve been getting a stack of people landing on my site (see bottom for the list) looking for information about Driscoll’s speaking engagements while in Australia. So here is an attempt to bring them all onto the one page. There are some other events that aren’t yet public (will link when they are) and as far as I can tell all the ones below are public. Let me know if you have any other dates to add.
The Resurgence have just launched a new website for their publishing arm Re:Lit. Re:Lit recently published Vintage Jesus, and will soon be releasing Death by Love (both books are by Mark Driscoll & Gerry Breshears).
Among their library I noticed that Total Church (by Tim Chester & Steve Timmis) will be republished by Re:Lit in September. A series of short books called A book you’ll actually read (by Mark Driscoll) will be published shortly. See below for videos on each of the books:
3 Random things: #1) No Saturday morning sleep-in. I’ve been up for a few hours helping some friends move house. I enjoy helping friends move, but I’d hate to be a removalist! #2) I spent a lot of time in the car by myself yesterday. I listened to 3 of my favourite sermons. The series is by Kanishka Raffel called LOVING JESUS from Katoomba Easter Convention 2004. ‘Underestimating God’s Love’ from Luke 15:11-32, ‘Underestimating Discipleship’ from Luke 14:15-35, ‘Underestimating the worth of wealth’ from Luke 16:1-13. I didn’t get time to listen to ‘Underestimating God’s word’ from Luke 16:19-31. The series is very challenging. #3) Have a good weekend.

Today is our Biblical Theology exam. There is a “BT Pack of Awesomeness” floating around, with a whole bunch of summary sheets for different topic areas. As good as the “pack” is, let me introduce you to… The “PAGE” of Awesomeness! This page has a framework that will help me to answer more than half of all the possible questions.
The “page of awesomeness” is basically a table and an extract from God’s Big Picture.GBPis a book by Vaughan Roberts that traces the story-line of the Bible under the theme of ‘The Kingdom of God’. Roberts’ aim was to further simplify the work of Graeme Goldsworthy and make it available to an even broader audience (if you are in youth ministry, get your teenagers into GBP!).
Okay monkeys. Here’s all of the questions from the last 10 years of Biblical Theology Exam papers. I hope it’s as helpful for you as it has been for me!
All the cool kids are using wordle: MPJ, JMoff, Doug, JMoff again and Sam. So, see below for a few more from this cool kid.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:1-3,14) Jesus, the creator of the universe, steps onto our planet and shares in the flesh of his creation.
The incarnation of the Son of God is significant within the purposes of God. The Apostle Paul puts it like this, “In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself” (2Cor 5:19). Graeme Goldsworthy says of its significance, “The incarnation of God is at the very centre of the gospel event by which God restores the true relationship between himself and the human race” (ATP, 264). In the incarnation Jesus shows himself to be: the true and living God; the true people of God; and the true Temple of God.
I got some new music from JB Hifi on Thursday night. I had a $40 gift voucher and picked up 4 CDs from Miles, Joe, Curtis + Amy.
Miles Davis – Kind of Blue: This CD is incredible. Chris got it for me for my 21st birthday, but it was stolen (we think) sometime in the last year. It’s considered to be one of the greatest Jazz albums of all time and Rolling Stone had it at #12 on their 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Joe Henderson – Page One: This was a reasonably random purchase. I was deciding between this one and a couple of other Jazz albums – and I chose this one because I liked the cover. It’s an awesome CD!!
Curtis Mayfield – The Very Best Of: About 10 years ago I heard a Curtis Mayfield song on the radio and wrote his name on my steering wheel so that I wouldn’t forget to look up more of his works. It’s taken 10 years – but The Very Best of Curtis Mayfield is very cool. He has a similar sound to Marvin Gaye. Soul, R&B, Funk.
Amy Winehouse – Frank: This is her debut album from 2003. Winehouse smashes out some killer R&B, Soul and Jazz tracks.
Okay. If you read edition one of this post, Row said no! We had a great time in Nowra last night. A bunch of peeps became Christian and a bunch more prayed that they would take following Jesus more seriously. Praise God!

Jesus is the Revolutionary King who suffers and dies in the place of sinners. He did the unexpected. What does it mean to follow Jesus? Doing the unexpected. Jesus says, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Following Jesus is radical and unexpected.
Who would want to worship a crucified saviour??? There’s an ancient graffiti sketch of an early Christian, Alexamenos, worshipping Jesus. The picture (click above for full pic) mockingly shows Jesus as half man/half donkey hanging on a cross. The world looks on in ridicule at the death of Jesus upon a dirty piece of wood. Jesus says in Mark 8:38 not to be ashamed of Him. Though the world may laugh, the follower of Jesus is to not only trust in Christ but also boast in His ridiculed cross. Following Jesus means you follow Jesus, not the opinions of man, not the latest techno-gadget, not the selfish desires of your heart. To follow Jesus is to love Jesus and to live for Jesus.
Jesus is the Revolutionary King who suffers and dies in the place of sinners. He did the unexpected. What does it mean to follow Jesus? Doing the unexpected. Jesus says, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Taking up your cross is radical and unexpected.
To take up your cross is to die. Die to self. Die to the world. Taking up your cross in this life involves losing your life here and now, but gaining life for eternity (Mark 8:35). Jesus suffered and it’s normal for his followers to suffer. When you understand the cross of Jesus and the big picture of eternity, you won’t just endure suffering but will rejoice in it!
Wanna “Live the Revolution”??? Then take up your cross.
Jesus is the Revolutionary King who suffers and dies in the place of sinners. He did the unexpected. What does it mean to follow Jesus? Doing the unexpected. Jesus says, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Denying yourself is radical and unexpected.
Our culture, teachers and hearts tell us to look out for ‘Numero Uno’, but Jesus says to deny yourself. Part of denying yourself will be denying the pleasures of this world and giving up the world and its desires (Mark 8:36-37). Denying yourself is putting Jesus first. Denying yourself is putting the needs of others ahead of your own. Denying yourself is loving Jesus more than yourself and loving Jesus more than the world.
Wanna “Live the Revolution”??? Then deny yourself.
Who is Jesus? Is he an Action Figure? Bobble Head? Ninja? When Jesus did a survey asking who people thought he was, some thought he was John the Baptist, others Elijah and others one of the Prophets. Jesus did some incredible things: He taught with authority; healed the sick; fed the hungry; calmed the storm and even brought a dead girl back to life! The question on everyone’s lips throughout Mark 1-8 was: Who is this man?
Peter’s answer: The Christ. What’s a Christ? It’s a King. Jesus is God’s chosen King. What does it mean for Jesus to be the King? Jesus says he must suffer, be rejected, killed and then rise again. Peter wasn’t expecting King Jesus to die. Jesus says he ‘must’ die. (Mark 8)
Jesus is the Revolutionary King who suffers and dies in the place of sinners. Jesus is the Servant King who lays down his life. This is radical. What does it mean to follow such a radical King? Stay tuned…
Rowena and I celebrated 5 years of marriage yesterday with a lovely dinner at Ripples, Chowder Bay. I’m not sure if it’s because we’ve been married for 5 years, or because we’re now closer to 30 than 25, but we have started to enjoy listening to VEGA 95.3. If you’re not familiar with VEGA, they define themselves as a station for 40s and 50s!!
Marriage is about Jesus. I pray ours would reflect this reality.
This post comes to you live from Rooty Hill! Had an awesome time with NFC Youth last night – the youth and their parents really got behind the bring a friend night – the numbers doubled… and a number of young guys prayed to become Christian and a whole bunch recommitted their lives to following Jesus!! Matt, Tash and their team are doing an incredible job in reaching Western Sydney teenagers with the goodnews of Jesus. Praise God.
