Tryhard wearing (fake) Ray Ban sunnies

I found a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses in the gutter on George St in the City today. I don’t think they actually belong to Ray Ban. Nor do I think they were even made by Ray Ban. Rather I think some guy pretending to be Ray Ban made them and sold them really cheaply. Then someone bought them. Then they lost them. Then I found then. The end.

7 Years = Perfect Marriage

It’s exactly a year since our 6th anniversary. You know what that means – today is our 7th anniversary! Very cool. In the Bible, the number 7 is often symbolic of wholeness, completeness, or perfection. It means we have finally attained the perfect marriage!!

Okay, maybe it’s not perfect, but I think it’s getting better. We still love each other and we’re learning more and more how to forgive each other. Love ya Row!

Are you married? Tip: Work hard on your marriage. We’ve been reading this book, What Did You Expect?: Redeeming the Realities of Marriage – it’s brilliant. Check it out!

If I could run a business…

We spent 4 hours in the car today travelling. One of the games we played was which 3 business would you like to own & run. The aim wasn’t to make lots of money, but rather something you’d be interested in operating. It was fun. Feel free to share yours.

Dave’s List:

  1. Cafe – I like the coffee thing, but probably more so the people thing.
  2. Shoe Shop – during high school and my first few years out of school I worked in a sport shop. I like shoes. The shoe shop would specialise in sports shoes and casual/urban/street shoes.
  3. Creative Suite – web/graphic design, marketing, advertising, PR etc.

Row’s List:

  1. Florist – even though she’s allergic to grass, she likes flowers. That’s cool. (Mental note: buy row flowers)
  2. Travel Agent – not just the opportunity to travel, but help people plan sweet trips.
  3. Art House Cinema – operating an independent cinema. A little bit like the one at Avoca Beach (if you haven’t been there… make the trip one day/night)

If I could run a business…

Pinch + Punch // June 2010

During summer, I had an “embracing summer” policy. It just meant I wouldn’t ever complain about the heat, but rather seek to enjoy it. I’m doing the same (or kinda the opposite!) this winter. I’m “embracing winter”. This means I won’t complain about the cold, wet or darkness; but rather enjoy this season in its time. If I complain about something to do with winter and you hear it – you have permission to slap me. Deal?

The high light of June will definitely be the FIFA Football World Cup held in South Africa. During the 1998 World Cup, my trial HSC was significantly impacted by late nights watching soccer matches. This year I have 2 exams at college during the world cup… good luck studying! This month’s Smashing Mag Wallpaper is the better of the 2 soccer related ones (see above). Australia for the win!

Grace overcomes bitterness

I’ve been fighting against the sin of bitterness. On my commute this morning, I wasn’t winning. Bitterness is sin and it’s ugly. I don’t want to be ugly, or have ugliness going on inside (even if no-one can see it). Ephesians 4:31 says to “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.” I had the verse ringing through my head all morning. But how do I get rid of bitterness?

The next verse answers that with a positive statement: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Eph 4:32). So I get rid of the crap stuff from v31 and then take hold of kindness, compassion and forgiveness from v32. The key? It’s the motivation in the final clause, “just as in Christ God forgave you.” The way in which I can get rid of bitterness is by reflecting on the grace of God in Christ Jesus.

Grace overcomes bitterness. Ephesians is a pretty sweet book to reflect on God’s grace. God’s grace is all about his incredible kindness shown to sinful people who don’t deserve it. God’s grace is all about Jesus dying in the place of sinners. God’s grace is all about being made alive with Christ.

Here’s how God’s grace helped me this morning to keep punching as bitterness reared its ugly face, I saw that:

  1. my sin is ugly before God (see Eph 2:1-3)
  2. God’s love expressed in Christ Jesus is beautiful and rich (see 2:4-5)
  3. the debt against me is far less than my incalculable debt against God
  4. grace now characterises my new life as one united with Christ (see ch 4-6)

Counting the cost of discipleship

Luke 9:18-27 is a passage that I regularly preach on. Recently I have been challenged to think through whether I’m willing to put into practise what I’ve been preaching. Check out what Jesus says is non-negotiable for one of his disciples: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (verse 23)

Denying self, taking up cross and following Jesus. Recently I’ve been thinking and praying through where and how to serve Jesus once college has finished. I’ve realised that following Jesus may lead to doing things that would have never even crossed my mind a few years ago.

We’re really starting to count the costs of what this could mean, convinced that whatever we do, following Jesus “demands my soul, my life, my all.”

Probably the highlight of May 2010

This picture Row took of Sam in the clam sand pit thing is probably the highlight of May 2010. I know there’s still another two thirds of May to go, but nothing will top it!

His abilities with a shovel have surpassed mine!

Sam + Millie got married!

Sam Mak and Millie Sharp got married over the weekend! It was a beautiful wedding and celebration. I had lots of fun as part of Sam’s posse. Here are the boys:

For more photos, there are like a million on facebook.

(Shout out to Faith Wan. I ripped this pic from her FB album)

Pinch + Punch // May 2010

Lots of my recent blog posts have been back-dated. This is no exception. Today is May 3, but I’m pretending it’s May 1. Sneaky sneaky. April has been fairly hectic. Good hectic. Really thankful for lots of opportunities to talk to people about Jesus. May will be a little less hectic, but still hopefully good! Below is my pick of the Smashing Mag May Wallpapers.

Praying Christian friends/readers: I’m currently talking to different churches/ministries about possible work for next year. I’d appreciate your prayers. Non-Christian friends: praying you’d come to know Jesus. This vid would be worth your time. Trust me.

Here’s the best of April (according to clicks) and some other stats:

Peaceout amigos.

Today is Compassion Day 2010

Today is Compassion Day 2010. “Each year, on one action-packed day, Compassion unites with Christian radio stations across Australia to take up a mighty challenge – changing the lives of 1600 children living in poverty.” This website isn’t a radio station, but I figure it’s a good opportunity to encourage readers to be generous. // Find out more info

Rwanda – Battling for safe drinking water – here’s a project that readers of dmdc have previously partnered with Compassion. // Find out more info about Compassion Day

Train a child in the way he should go

…and when he is old he will not turn from it. (Proverbs 22:6) Sam likes books. I like reading books with him. There are some pretty meaty books on the 2 shelves he’s perusing in the pic below. However, the heaviest book in that shot is hard to see. It’s near his right hand, Where Did I Come From. Now that will be an adventure!!

Parenting is exciting and daunting. My prayer is that I would be training him now in the way he should go and that when he’s old he will not turn from it.

Pinch + Punch // April 2010

This is definitely in the top two Pinch + Punch blog posts. Wow. Some cool things coming up in April. However, the April Smashing Magazine Desktop Wallpapers are pretty lame. I’ve chosen the Revolution one below. It doesn’t look that good and the calendar has nothing on it to differentiate the different days. Dumb.

I chose it because it’s a reminder of a Bible series I’ve done about 6 times in the last year or so, and hopefully it will remind me to be ‘radially changed by the good news of Jesus’. I did the series most recently in the Riverina and I’ll be doing it in a couple of weeks with MBM Youth. Some major changes/tweaks coming for the series. I’m hoping to turn it into a free e-book for youth later in the year. We’ll see…

April is also the month for KYCK. It sounds like it’s going to be the biggest one ever, my tip is 6000 young peeps!!! I’m really excited to be preaching there. I’ll be giving the Saturday night evangelistic talk. I’ve given the talk a couple of times already and been given some really useful feedback from a preacher friend. If you’re a Christian – I’d appreciate your prayers. If you’re not a Christian – check out this crazy website.

I enjoyed the Haiku poetry anthology in the comments last month. How about we try Limericks this month?? Leave one if you’re feeling creative or bored… Thanks.

Rwanda – Battling for safe drinking water

“We shall not finally defeat AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, or any of the other infectious diseases that plague the developing world until we have also won the battle for safe drinking water, sanitation and basic health care.” (Kofi Anna – Former United Nations Secretary General – World Day for Water, March 2005).

What does the world need most? Forgiveness of sin that comes only through trusting in the death and resurrection of Jesus. BUT the book of James makes it clear that for followers of Jesus, real faith is shown in action.

GOOD NEWS: In a small way, readers of dmdc have put their faith into action and raised $1741 to help provide safe drinking water in the developing world. This is $200 more than the original target! Read the first 3 posts: one, two, three.

The money will go towards a fantastic Compassion project in Rwanda. The aim of the project is to contribute to the reduction of water-borne diseases among Compassion assisted children by supplying 20 Compassion child development centres with safe drinking water to meet their basic needs. I’m really impressed with Compassion’s work in Rwanda and I’m glad that this water project fits into a larger ongoing strategy.

Expected Project Outcomes

  • At least 75 per cent of Compassion assisted children are supplied with a basic amount of clean water per day (60 litres per household).
  • Water shortages in beneficiary villages are reduced.
  • Families in the vicinity of the church partner property have regular access to water supplied by the tanks.
  • Each church planter is trained in the use and maintenance of the water tanks and has taken over financial and operational responsibilities of the water tank.

Thanks to those who have contributed. Praise God for the generosity of his people!

If you want more info on the project, I can send you a detailed PDF. Likewise, if you want to contribute to the project, let me know or contact Compassion directly.

Shout out to Timmy B

Row and Sam weren’t able to come to the Riverina Youth Convention. So Tim Blomfield joined me for the road trip. The air con wasn’t working in the car – so it was crazy hot on the way down, and fairly hot on the way back. But that didn’t get in the way of good times and lots of good conversation.

My theory in taking someone was that it would be good to:

  • have company for the 10 hours of driving
  • spend informal time encouraging and training a young punk
  • have absolutely no opportunities to scoop fire (see v27)

So shout out to Tim!

I played chicken with my host

I met my host family tonight. Lovely family. We spent about 4 hours chatting! Around midnight the family of 4 had dwindled down to 1. So it was just the father and me left. I was getting tired. But I didn’t want to be the one to break off the conversation. So in my head I thought I’d play chicken with him. Last one left standing wins.

By 1am I realised that I needed to call it off. But I couldn’t. I had to win. I thought if I just held out for another minute or two, he’d say “good night” first. He didn’t. I did. He wins. I lose. That’s okay.

I miss my family already, but here are 3 reasons why being billeted is gold:

  1. A tangible way of showing our gospel partnership
  2. A glimpse into the culture of the family, the local church and the local community
  3. An encouragement hearing of God’s work in their lives

Nine + Nine

Today was Samuel’s 18 month birthday. Nine months in the womb, nine months out of the womb. Here’s a photo of Sam having too much fun while eating dinner:

Another pic below… He’s just done the smackdown on his father (me):

Pinch + Punch // March 2010

Welcome to an exciting new monthly blog series at dmdc: Pinch + Punch! It may look like a re-branding of a previous lamely named series – but it’s oh so much more! // March isn’t too hectic at college, but I’ve got quite a few speaking opportunities. So hoping I can preach well AND work hard at college even though there isn’t much due.

I planned on trying to design a desktop wallpaper each month. Let’s be real. That’s not going to happen. So above is my favourite from the March selection at Smashing Magazine. It’s called: Haiku on Hanami. I’m not very good at poetry. But I want to be. So I’m hoping it will inspire me to greater poetic poetry poetiness. Or not.

Here’s the best of February (according to clicks) and some other stats:

If you’ve read this far – you have to leave a comment in the form of a Haiku poem. 5-7-5. Thanks.

40 Days of Water

I just drank my first cup of coffee in 40 days. Yum. I’ve been part of a group of people involved in 40 Days of Water. How did it work? You only drink tap-water for the 40 days. You keep a tally of how much money you saved by eliminating other drinks. You give that money toward providing clean drinking water in Africa.

It’s been a hard time to do it. It’s the middle of summer. I’ve hung out for a week in Clovelly with all its trendy cafes, no coffee allowed. I’ve hung out for a week in Bellingen with all its hippie cafes, no coffee allowed. I’ve been down to Terrigal a stack of times, no coffee allowed. And I’ve been offered countless coffees from friends and family, no coffee allowed.

It was a very useful exercise. I don’t really need coffee, but I did miss drinking it. Three things happened regularly for me when saying no to non-water drinks:

  1. I realised how rich I am. I have access to whatever I want to drink, whenever I want to drink it. I have so much money that I can spend $4 on a coffee without it making too much of a financial impact!
  2. I am so rich, such that, even when I don’t buy drinks, I have beautiful, clean, tasty water flowing like a teeming river form 6 taps in my house. What privilege.
  3. It’s not that hard to be generous with even a few dollars to make a big difference in the lives of those in need.

Adieu à Willoughby Eglise

Vous allez nous manquer! Last night we finished at Willoughby Anglican church. It really was a good year! I enjoyed leading a youth group bible study, playing guitar regularly and preaching. The highlight was the warm fellowship and encouragement of many people. We hope we were likewise an encouragement. As well as relationships, we’ll also fondly remember our time in Willoughby as the time when our first child was born.

Here’s some plans for 2010

  • We’re part of the 1030 congregation at EV Church and Rowena is in a growth group – the plan is to continue there for the time being.
  • I’ll have a bit more time for guest speaking at youth groups, camps, conferences, churches etc (this includes being available on Sunday nights). Let me know if you need a speaker.
  • This is my final year at Moore College – so we’re hoping to work out the plan for 2011 within the next couple of months!
  • I’ll continue to work as a casual youth worker with Gosford Council
  • Here are specific resolutions for 2010 I wrote on January 1.

ps – if you were wondering why the title of this post is in French, there are at least two reasons: 1) I like using google translate 2) French is sexy.

Clean Water For An Entire Community – Only $200 To Go!

DMDC is partnering with Compassion Australia to raise money to provide clean drinking water for an entire community. Here is the original post with the plan of attack. We have now raised $1341. The target is $1541. That means only $200 to go! I’m thankful to God for the generosity of DMDC readers as well as family & friends on Facebook and Twitter.

I think it’s really cool to be able to leverage social media and blogging for good.

Want to help with the final $200?? DONATE NOW.
