Compassion Trip to Tanzania with Colin Buchanan

Compassion do an amazing job at releasing children from poverty. Over December/January during the last 2 years readers of this blog have been part of raising just under $5000 for clean water projects in Rwanda and Northern India. I’m planning on partnering with Compassion again this Summer. Stay tuned! In the meantime, I’ll be following along with Colin Buchanan and a bunch of ministers from around Sydney as they visit Tanzania.

Clean Water for Uttarakhand, Northern India

Back in December/January friends and readers of DMDC were part of raising $2835 to go toward a clean water project for India. We were aiming for $2000, but well and truly exceeded that target. 12 months before that we raised some cash for clean water in Rwanda. I dig the idea of using blogs and social media to raise money for works of justice.

Thanks again to all those who gave generously. Below are some of the project details from Compassion. If you contributed and you’re keen for a longer PDF, let me know.

DMDC is proud to partner with Compassion Australia to release children from poverty in Jesus’ name.

Together, we will provide deep tube wells to three child development centres in northern India, ensuring they have a long-term supply of clean water. Through our partnership, more than 600 Compassion assisted children will receive the gift of this most precious resource.

Now, mothers and fathers will not have to walk long distances to fetch water, or queue for hours at the town well. Children will be better protected from waterborne diseases and able to attend school, learn, grow and develop to fulfil their potential.

This water intervention is part of Compassion’s Complementary Interventions program.

Complementary Interventions—Completing Compassion’s programs
Compassion seeks to address all the obstacles that can hinder and impede the healthy development of children. From providing clean water to emergency relief, income-generation training and many others, Compassion’s Complementary Interventions tackle some of these additional concerns and provide solutions that enhance, improve and complement their core programs.

Clean Water, Dirty Water and the Dash for Cash

A year ago family, friends and social network buddies all helped DMDC to raise $1741 toward safe drinking water for a community in Rwanda. This year, we are aiming to raise $2000 to help provide clean water for 601 children in India. We’re currently sitting at $1560… sweeeeet! There have been some developments today worth sharing.

  1. Nathan Campbell has offered a 250g bag of fresh coffee beans to anyone who gives $30 or more this weekend. Pretty sweet deal. He’s one of those coffee-coffee coffee-people, he has even recently launched a new coffee blog… all that’s to say, he’s got a sweet rep for sweet beans! He’s extended the offer for the rest of the weekend. MORE INFO.
  2. This evening, when the total was $1400, a generous person offered to match all other donations – up to $600. What this means is that if we make it to $2000 by midnight (Sydney time) on Sunday evening, we will actually raise $2600. Pretty sweet yeah? They wish to remain anonymous. MORE INFO.

Stoked to use the internet and social media to raise money for worthy causes.

Clean Water for 601 Children in India

I’m incredibly wealthy. I have 10+ access points to clean water in my house!! One of my responsibilities as a follower of Jesus is to be generous with the much that I have been given, because not everyone has access to the resources I have on tap.

Every 20 seconds, a child dies from a water-related disease. But these deaths can be prevented by providing them with clean water. I’m partnering with Compassion Australia to help provide hundreds of children access to clean water through purification systems, rain water tanks and other water-harvesting systems.

Funds raised will be used to help fund water projects in 3 Indian towns:

  • Kehri Guan (215km NE of Dehli)
  • Rasha Farm, Gumaniwala (259km NE of Dehli)
  • Garhwali (450km N of Dehli)

Direct beneficiaries: 646 (601 children, 45 adults)

Last year $1741 was raised by readers of my blog for a project in Rwanda. I think it’s incredible to be able to use social media and a blog to raise money for something useful! This year I’m aiming for $2000. Any amount would be appreciated.

Today is Compassion Day 2010

Today is Compassion Day 2010. “Each year, on one action-packed day, Compassion unites with Christian radio stations across Australia to take up a mighty challenge – changing the lives of 1600 children living in poverty.” This website isn’t a radio station, but I figure it’s a good opportunity to encourage readers to be generous. // Find out more info

Rwanda – Battling for safe drinking water – here’s a project that readers of dmdc have previously partnered with Compassion. // Find out more info about Compassion Day

Rwanda – Battling for safe drinking water

“We shall not finally defeat AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, or any of the other infectious diseases that plague the developing world until we have also won the battle for safe drinking water, sanitation and basic health care.” (Kofi Anna – Former United Nations Secretary General – World Day for Water, March 2005).

What does the world need most? Forgiveness of sin that comes only through trusting in the death and resurrection of Jesus. BUT the book of James makes it clear that for followers of Jesus, real faith is shown in action.

GOOD NEWS: In a small way, readers of dmdc have put their faith into action and raised $1741 to help provide safe drinking water in the developing world. This is $200 more than the original target! Read the first 3 posts: one, two, three.

The money will go towards a fantastic Compassion project in Rwanda. The aim of the project is to contribute to the reduction of water-borne diseases among Compassion assisted children by supplying 20 Compassion child development centres with safe drinking water to meet their basic needs. I’m really impressed with Compassion’s work in Rwanda and I’m glad that this water project fits into a larger ongoing strategy.

Expected Project Outcomes

  • At least 75 per cent of Compassion assisted children are supplied with a basic amount of clean water per day (60 litres per household).
  • Water shortages in beneficiary villages are reduced.
  • Families in the vicinity of the church partner property have regular access to water supplied by the tanks.
  • Each church planter is trained in the use and maintenance of the water tanks and has taken over financial and operational responsibilities of the water tank.

Thanks to those who have contributed. Praise God for the generosity of his people!

If you want more info on the project, I can send you a detailed PDF. Likewise, if you want to contribute to the project, let me know or contact Compassion directly.

DMDC is raising $1541 to provide clean water for children

I’ve recently been challenged in 2 ways: 1) At EV Church, we have just completed a series on James. In James, real faith is shown in action. 2) At Willoughby Church, over Christmas, we are raising money to buy water wells in Cambodia for $1500.

can you help?

I figured that $1500 isn’t that much! Over the last couple of years, the readership of davemiers.com has steadily increased such that, with your help it is an achievable target. Let’s do it! I’m looking for 49 people to help… (DONATE NOW)

  • 1 person @ $200
  • 3 people @ $100 each
  • 10 people @ $50 each
  • 15 people @ $25 each
  • 20 people @ $10 each

Are you one of those 49 people? DONATE NOW!

This fund-raising is done in partnership with Compassion Australia.

For many children, there’s water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink! There are many diseases affecting children that could be easily prevented by providing them with access to clean water. This gift can help give the gift of life to hundreds of children by providing clean water through purification systems, rain water tanks and other water harvesting systems.

DONATE NOW. Is it too ambitious to do it by Christmas??? Help spread the word…
