Dustin Kensrue, former font man of Thrice, recently released a new album under the Mars Hill Music label called THE WATER AND THE BLOOD. It’s got some great tracks and I’m really enjoying the album. Below is an acoustic version of the opening track “REJOICE”. A good song that I’d love to see in the mix with the songs we do at Soulies and St Faiths. Here it is:
THE DISPATCH // NEW @MARSHILLMUSIC EP
The newest band out of Mars Hill Church – THE DISPATCH – have just launched their self-titled EP. I received a copy a week ago and have had it on repeat for the whole week! Mars Hill bands continue to produce solid new songs and contemporary arrangements of older songs. THE DISPATCH has two originals and two fresh arrangements.
Here’s my brief run down of the tracks…
- Track 1 – The Word – straight up, all about Jesus. Lyrics from the prologue of John’s Gospel.
- Track 2 – By His Grace – epic themes of being saved by God through grace, faith and Christ from the book of Ephesians.
- Track 3 – The Solid Rock – Edward Mote’s My Hope is Built is a classic hymn and this is a good version. Good beat and much more singable than one that has been sung in Sydney for the last 20 years.
- Track 4 – How Deep the Father’s Love – this modern day hymn from Getty & Townend is an amazing song that will be sung for many years to come! So it’s worth having new arrangements. This is probably my favourite version of the song and also my favourite track on the EP. It is very folky, driven by quality picking on the acoustic guitar. The female voice and the slightly faster tempo make it a beautiful rendition.
We do lots of Mars Hill arrangements in our church and youth community. I can see all of these songs getting a run in the future. Highly recommend.
Go download the EP now. It’s only $4!!

THE GOOD KING // GHOST SHIP New Album
Ghost Ship, one of the bands from Mars Hill Church, have just dropped their new album, The Good King. Preview and buy the album here. Check out the preview vid:
Really good Jesus-centred, gospel-centred lyrics. A number of the songs pick up the idea of Jesus as the fulfilment of Old Testament promises. I’m really enjoying all the tracks. So far, my three favourites are:
- track 3 – lion man // some good atonement theology with driving southern rock
- track 7 – holy holy holy // this hymn remake is all about the pipe organ at the end!
- track 10 – where were you // job 38 richness (God is God and you’re not)
Here is a lyric clip for track 1 ‘Mediator’
CITIZENS // I AM LIVING IN A LAND OF DEATH
CITIZENS // MADE ALIVE
I really dig the music coming out of Mars Hill Church. We’ve played a number of the CITZENS songs/arrangements at Soulies Youth (actually ALL the ones off the Already / Not Yet EP). They have a full length album dropping in a couple of weeks. Here is the first track from it, the Ephesians inspired, Made Alive:
