Jesus Life Culture Design #11

Mark Driscoll is in town this week. Media Reports: smh; sydney anglicans 1; and sydney anglicans 2. There are just 2 tickets left to Sick of Religion and about 50 left to Lovin’ the Coast. Register online. I’m looking forward to hearing Mark speak a number of times over the week. Three things I value about Mark Driscoll’s preaching: 1) He’s not boring 2) He boldly speaks the truth and 3) He speaks about Jesus… a lot!

Michael Guglielmucci admits faking cancer

Michael Guglielmucci was a Pastor from Planetshakers Church in Melbourne. He is known for his stuggle with cancer over the last two years. Earlier this year he released a song, Healer, about his struggle on the latest Hillsong live album. The thing is, he never had cancer. He has admitted to faking his cancer, deceiving 1000s of people including his own family. I find it difficult to imagine how he pulled it off. He may not have cancer – but I’m certain he needs help.

I read it first on Carlos Whittaker’s blog this morning. Adelaide Now and The Australian ran the news this morning. Mark Sayers’ post this afternoon quotes the letter the church leaders sent out to the church with the news. The following is a quote from Sayers I can’t help but agree with:

Big weekend in sport: Usain Bolt of Jamaica smashes the world record in 100m Olympic sprint final; Grant Hackett came so close; Michael Phelps becomes the greatest Olympic Athlete of all-time; Stephanie Rice proves she’s a better swimmer than her ex-boyfriend; the A-League and English Premier League kick off; and DAVE MIERS scores his 3rd goal of the season in EV’s 4-2 victory over Bayside.

Remember, don’t worship sport. (ps – this blog just hit 50,000 hits)

Cup Rocking

Walking past a trendy urban store in Chatswood today, I noticed something of a graffiti revolution in the form of CUPROCKING. Heard of it? Here’s a definition: “Cuprocking is the brain child of Sydney based artist Andy Uprock. By mapping out large areas of cyclone fencing and sticking plastic cups into the existing diamond shaped holes, Andy transforms streets and public areas into floating walk-by galleries. Andy typically uses around 2,500 individual cups for each piece and recycles them between each project.”

I was immediately grabbed by the colour and simplicity of the sample in the shop. I like it. This form of art could easily be used in creating a (relatively) cheap set/stage design or adding some colour to a youth room at your church. Check out Andy’s gallery and have a go at (virtual) cup rocking.

What do you think… Good, bad or ugly art?

The Idol of Sport

Let the games begin… Australia is a nation infatuated with sport. We are tribal about our sporting teams, whether it’s: Manly Sea-Eagles, Sydney FC, The Swans, The Tahs, The Wallabies or the Australian Swim team. In Australia we follow sport like a religion – we follow sports people like gods.

Don Bradman, Cathy Freeman, Ian Thorpe and maybe even Stephanie Rice (Australia’s first gold medal today) are all god-like figures. Every week more people fill sports stadiums to worship the gods of their sport – than people gather to worship Jesus. It’s easy to idolise sport.

So much money is invested into Australian sport. Is it really a good investment?

Well known Christian Musician, Steven Curtis Chapman, and well known Christian Pastor + Evangelist, Greg Laurie, both recently lost a child in tragic circumstances. This morning we watched the Chapman family on Larry King Live and some heart-felt words from Laurie to his church last weekend. The resurrection of Jesus gives Christians a hope in suffering that the world doesn’t understand:

13Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. (1 Thessalonians 4)
