Dove Onslaught

This is the latest Dove from the ‘Campaign For Real Beauty‘.
(h/t ypulse – check out some of the stats below)

  • The average person sees between 400 and 600 advertisements per day – equivalent to more than one message for every waking minute.
  • The average US girl has the opportunity to see an estimated 77,546 commercials by the time she is 12 years old.
  • 93 percent of girls and young women report feeling anxiety or stress about some aspect of their looks when getting ready in the morning
  • This could explain why more than 70 percent of girls and young women avoid activities when they feel bad about their looks including giving their opinion, attending school and even going to the doctor.
  • 76 percent of girls and young women admit to partaking in unhealthy activities when they feel badly about their bodies
  • 58 percent of girls describe themselves in negative terms, including words like “disgusting” and “ugly,” when feeling badly about themselves.
  • Nearly four out of 10 engage in unhealthy eating behaviors, such as anorexia or bulimia.
  • More than one out of 10 girls has used cutting or self-inflicted injury as a coping mechanism.

While on the net – check out one of their previous ones: evolution AND a parody I just found… very funny!

  1. I’m always cynical about this kind of thing, but it might just be that the people at Dove just see a real problem and want to make it right.

    Good video.

  2. even if the people at dove have an ulterior motive, good on them for even attempting to get girls to believe this.

it’s such a big issue, and it’s not just limited to the girls who are anorexic or the ones who are cutting.

we’re told we can be perfect physically, so anything less than that is regarded by society – and therefore us – as a failure.
it infiltrates every part of life .. not only what you eat/wear, but also who you hang around with (‘i’m too selfconscious to spend time with girls who are a size 8’) and your self esteem on every level (‘maybe they’re just paying me a compliment about how smart i am because i’m so fat they can’t comment on my appearance’)

    more needs to be done.

the industry needs to change, but more importantly, people’s perceptions need to change.

maybe you don’t think skinny girls are the most beautiful – but don’t just leave it at that. tell girls that!

  3. Go Dove! I love what they are trying to do.

They also have a new ‘pro’ (not anti) age campaign…

  4. Beauty is a complicated thing. And weight is a big aspect we shouldn’t ignor because its a big problem in Australia and USA now, for health reasons.

But no one in my family is allowed to go under the knife because it is so easy to run around the blog and eat right. Most girls will look “hot” with regular soccer practice and normal food. No need for special soaps or makeup.

  5. I too am cynical about why Dove is doing this – but putting aside their motives, I’m glad the campaign is being done.
