Help young punks to read the Bible

Here’s a youth ministry idea: help young punks to read the Bible. That’s one of the goals behind our DAILY BIBLE JOURNAL. For these school holidays we’re encouraging our crew to read through some of the Psalms.

I was going to have a crack at writing some school holiday reading notes, but in the end thought I’d use a brilliant new resource from Matt Jacobs. It’s a project called SixtySixBooks. Basically it provides an intro to different books of the Bible in a way that youth can understand along with a sample reading plan.

We’re using Graham Stanton’s notes on the Psalms.

What strategies do you use to help young people dig into God’s word?

  1. Can I make a small suggestion?

Lose the “for teenagers”. It’s a great resource for everybody, and so far I haven’t seen anything particularly teen-related :)

      1. Here’s the story.

Currently we have a 5pm family service that was planted with about 10 people about 10 years ago. These people came from the 7pm young adults service and had a few young children between them. Those young children have now grown up and are just about to hit high school. The kids program has about 60-70 primary aged kids).

The group is going to be a continuation of the kids program, so it’ll be full of kids whose parents are regulars at Church. Meeting at the same time as Church (5pm), and it’ll be in addition to the Friday night group.

So next year the group will be about 5 or 6 people (plus Alice and I), but in the years to come it will grow significantly up to 50-60, assuming that the kids groups don’t grow further.

We’re thinking (and praying) about how best to run a small group that will become a big group quickly. Very exciting!

        1. sounds great!!
i remember when that congregation was planted (and know lots of the people, it’s row’s old church) i can’t believe their kids are about to hit high school!!

is the plan to have the 5pm youth bible study also go to the friday night youth gathering?

          1. Yeah I’m pretty sure that’s the plan. And we’ll encourage them to bring friends on Friday I think. But if they brought friends on Sunday then that would be awesome too!

The groups in early planning at the moment, we’ll see what God does with it!
