Joost

Joost is the latest thing. I think. It’s from the makers of skype (I think). Joost is Free internet TV when you want it where you want it (or something like that). It’s still in beta phase – and I think you need to be invited to use it. (I have an account and can invite you if you want – just email me or leave your email address in the comments).

There are stacks of channels. Lots of fighting channels. Guinness World Records type thing. Ummm. Here’s a channel list. Maybe 100 channels? They have whole seasons that you can watch at your own pace. Row and I have found one to watch: Bridezillas. It follows some rich New York brides-to-be in the lead up to their wedding. Haven’t seen much yet.

I’m not a huge TV fan (we don’t have one)… I don’t think this will change me. But I think it’s a good concept. You don’t have to watch ads etc… and you don’t have to adhere to the TV Network’s timing schedule. This is web 2.0 and the future of television.

Hey Christians in the Media crew – maybe try and get your new show on there??? What do you think?

The pic is a screen shot of ‘the cold war kids’ live in concert.
Just quickly looked @ the wikipedia entry. here.

  1. i’ve had the cold war kids concert playing in the background – good stuff!

  2. We’re also adding exciting new programming from five content owners – Turner Broadcasting System, Sony Pictures Television, Hasbro, the NHL and SI. Beginning later this week, you’ll begin to see shows from these providers on Joost – shows like “Aqua Teen Hunger Force,” “The Transformers,” “G.I. Joe,” “Starsky & Hutch,” “Charlie’s Angels” and “NewsRadio.

    sweet

  4. What sort of “fighting” do they have?

Do they have a Christian channel?

  5. fighting:

    Channel FIGHT NETWORK
do these ring a bell for you?

    TKO
    MECA
    Ballroom Boxing
    Rumble on the Rock

they are a lot like ultimate fighting.
(that’s based on looking at the little thumbnails… and watching one of the TKO (i think) bouts last week.)

they have another channel call “seconds out” – it looks like it’s standard boxing?

  6. i can’t see a Christian channel.

as far as looking for content…
    not sure???

cos it’s early days – it’s still in construction phase.

it looks like all that stuff is being negotiated… not sure how many bucks you need to get a part of it???

    here’s a clip from wikipedia:

Viacom Inc. and Joost entered into a content provider agreement for the Joost platform on February 20, 2007. Under the agreement divisions of Viacom (including MTV Networks, BET Networks and Paramount Pictures) will license their “television and theatrical programing” to Joost.[6] This came shortly after Viacom requested 100,000 potentially infringing videos to be removed from YouTube.com, which showed a preference by Viacom for the Joost platform over YouTube.[7]

Joost also currently has licensing agreements in place with Ministry of Sound TV, Warner Music, the production company Endemol[8], Diversion Media[9], CBS[10] and CenterStaging’s rehearsals.com[11]. On May 1, 2007, Joost signed a deal to distribute NHL content, including full game replays of the Stanley Cup Finals, and vintage games.[12]

  7. I can’t get it to work. I’ve opened the approp. ports, but no joy. Sounds like there’s some major issues with 0.9.0.

  8. Hey Dave. Sounds really interesting. I’d love to check it out.

    jones.chris[at]tpg.com.au

  9. thanks mate. works really well. i’ve got it set as a small window set to ‘always on-top’ which is great to have music videos running whilst i work…

no christian channel in sight tho…

  10. good stuff.

what type of bandwidth do you think it’s churning through??

    peaceout

  11. according to the joost website:

“Joost is a streaming video application, and so uses a relatively high amount of bandwidth per hour. In one hour of viewing, approximately 320Mb data will be downloaded and 105Mb uploaded, which means that it will exhaust a 1Gb cap in 10 hours. Windows users should note that the application continues to run in the background after you close the main window. For this reason, if you pay for your bandwidth usage per megabyte or have your usage capped by your ISP, you should be careful to always exit Joost client completely when you are finished watching it.”

  12. Sounds awesome Dave. Can you hook me up mktooseATgmailDOTcom looking forward to GI Joe. I still have most of my GI Joe stuff. Ahh memories. Not sure about the bandwidth use though – I’ll let you know if it works on Mac?!?

  13. hey andy – i sent an invite to andy b… assuming it’s andy b! if it’s a different andy let me know!

  14. Thanks for the invite Dave. I downloaded it before reading the system requirements (oops) and have found that it only works on the newer Macs with Intel processors – bummer!
