Music Appreciation Night – Song List

Row proposed that we have a night of square-dancing to finish our term together as a Small Group. Luckily we didn’t do square dancing. Instead we had a ‘Music Appreciation Night’. It was so much fun. Each person in our group had to have 2 songs prepared (with another 2 backups) to play for the rest of the group. It was cool to hear different songs and be introduced to music for the first time.

Before each song was played we introduced it to the group, made a few comments afterwards, took further questions or comments and then moved on to the next person. We basically did two laps of the room.

Here are the songs from each round:

Round 1
Hunting for witches – Bloc Party (Tim)
That’s What Friends Are For – Dionne Warwick (Ellen)
Violet Stars Happy Hunting – Janelle Monae (Scott)
Somewhere Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World – Israel Kamakawiwo’ole (Meghan)
Saigon Battle Children 1972 – Elixir (Dave)
Cellophane Life – Mark Wilkinson (Cathy)
There’s Still Hope – Bob Harris (Stuey)
Clair de Lune – Claude Debussy (Row)
Kate – Ben Folds Five (Jimmy)

Round 2

Monster – Skillet (Tim)
Keep On Hoping – Raul Midon (With Jason Mraz) (Ellen)
Folding Chair – Regina Spektor (Scott)
Lost – Michael Bublé (Meghan)
One Righteous Man – Chad Gardner (Dave)
At The Bottom Of Everything – Bright Eyes (Cathy)
Blue (Da Ba Dee) – Eiffel 65 (Stuey)
Shiver – Coldplay (Row)
Wet Sand – Red Hot Chilli Peppers (Jimmy)

There you have it.

What 2 would you play? Why?

  1. It was super fun. What a cool group of people to hang with. Thanks for the great year to date guys!!!

  2. Great idea! Might use it myself :)

The two I’d play (if we were doing it tonight) would be…

    1. Radio Ballet – Eluvium
    2. Changes – 2Pac

      1. Yeah!

Kat and I used “Radio Ballet” at our wedding. The piano is beautiful and haunting.

“Changes” is an exemplary appropriation of Bruce Hornsby’s “The way it is.” Good use of the sample and brilliant verses to rework the original subject matter in 2Pac’s own context and era.
