Embrace Humble Orthodoxy

While watching the New Attitude 2008 Conference video (see it below – it’s a good vid), I was reminded of Humble Orthodoxy. I’ve posted on it before.

Humble Orthodoxy

Josh Harris preaches a message I need to keep hearing. Now that I’m hanging out with Anglicans more, it’s a message that they need to hear too! There are Reformed Evangelical Christians who are so dogmatic about the truth, that they fail to love. Arrogant Orthodoxy is ugly. Humble orthodoxy is “a commitment to believe, live, and represent biblical truth with humility.”

If you are a pastor or pastor-in-training, whether you think you’re arrogant or not, please, for the Glory of Jesus, listen to this word and embrace Humble Orthodoxy.

Missions and Masturbation

Keith Condie ripped it to bits today in chapel with a sermon on Psalm 101. Some good things on what it meant for King David and what it now means for us this side of the death and resurrection of Jesus. He mentioned a letter written by John Piper in 1984 called “Missions and Masturbation” that almost got him fired!!

Missions and Masturbation

In his Passion 07 sermon, How to Deal with the Guilt of Sexual Failure for the Glory of Christ and His Global Cause, Piper makes reference to that letter. The letter was very blunt and the sermon is very good!

South Coast Revolution

South Coast Revolution is a brand new combined youth event being run in the Nowra area. I will be speaking at their first event on June 13. They have borrowed lots of ideas from Coast Youth Revolution – which is cool!

Soccer isn’t life, but…

As a teenager I read a soccer magazine that had the same tagline at the end of each editorial: Soccer is life, the rest is just details. I used to believe that, but now I believe that Jesus is life and the rest is just details!

FIFA Street 3

Soccer may no longer be number 1 – but there are some killer soccer vids on youtube!! Check out the vid below – some of the moves may even be real!!

Don’t steal God’s Glory #3

The 5th slogan made famous by Martin Luther and his posse during the Protestant Reformation of the 1500s helps to summarise the other four.

Don’t steal God’s Glory #3

SOLI DEO GLORIA = Glory to God Alone.

Bible Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone and Christ Alone show us that salvation belongs to God. His Word is our final authority. He gives us a gracious gift we don’t deserve. Our faith is in what God has done. And Jesus has done it all! He cries “It is finished” from the cross. This means that God has done everything necessary to achieve our justification and salvation.

Don’t steal God’s Glory #2

When a Roman Catholic – or any religious person – attempts to contribute something to their salvation they are trying to steal God’s glory.

Don’t steal God’s Glory #1

We like glory. We love to make ourselves glorious! It’s one thing to steal glory from your friend, neighbour or sporting opponent, but it’s another thing altogether when you try and steal glory from God!! Who do you think you’re messing with!!

Don’t steal God’s Glory #1

World Catholic Youth Day 08 is coming soon. The RTA is doing a good job at advertising it on their flashing signs on main roads in Sydney and surrounding areas. As WCYD08 gets closer, there will be lots of discussion about the differences between the Roman Catholic Church and Protestant Christianity.

Nothing in my hand I bring

Nothing in my hand I bring – by Ray Galea

Book Review

Nothing in my hand…

In preparation for some recent talks on the 5 Solas of the Reformation, I read Ray Galea’s new book Nothing in my hand I bring (published by Matthias Media). I believe that Galea’s book is a very helpful read for all Protestants in the lead up to the World Catholic Youth Day 2008 (which incidentally will cost NSW tax payers $86million).

Music and Youth Sub-Cultures

I recently gave Dan an essay question. He did a fine job in answering it. Originally the plan was to use some of his thinking in an intro for a talk, but the talk changed its tack… but it’s still helpful – and will most definitely help in an upcoming talk.

Music + Youth Sub-Cultures

Here’s the question: In 100-1000 words (100 is fine – just saying 1000 in case you want to go crazy* with it!) discuss the impact of music on youth sub-cultures. Your answer should include the relationship of music to youth sub-culture and the changing cultural trends during the last 20 years.

I spoke on 2 camps this past week. On Youthworks Soccer Camp I got to talk about Jesus and play and coach soccer all day… so good!!! I did a modified version of some lost and found talks (plus some bible studies). The 2nd camp was CCECYOUTH Phat. It was a Viking theme called PHAT LEGENDS – good times. I spoke on ‘Truths Worth Dying For’: Bible Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Christ Alone and To the Glory of God Alone (see Row’s accompanying Protestant Bio’s).

Portrait of a Protestant: Calvin

Christ Alone – John Calvin (1509-1564)
Guest Blogger: Rowena Miers

John Calvin

Jesus Christ is undisputedly one of the most widely known and controversial figures of human history. Even today there are t-shirts made that brand him as “my homeboy”, he is featured in classical and modern art, and his name is even used the world over as a swear word. Despite Jesus being a world wide figure of intense public interest and scrutiny, there are many in the Christian church today who do not consider the bible truths about Jesus as being central to Christian belief. John Calvin a 16th century Swiss reformation theologian and pastor is one whose life and ministry contended for the centrality of Jesus Christ to Christian belief and worship.

Faith Alone – Martin Luther (1483-1546)
Guest Blogger: Rowena Miers

Martin Luther

The word faith is often used in a vague and uncertain fashion. Despite its vague usage the word ‘faith’ is key to Christian belief as shown in the life and work of Martin Luther a 16th century German theologian and preacher.

Martin Luther was born on November 10, 1483 in Eisleben, Germany as the son of a copper miner. His father had wanted him to enter the legal profession however on July 2 1505, on the way home from law school upon being caught in a thunderstorm and hurled to the ground by lightening he cried out, “Help me, St. Anne; I will become a monk”. Fifteen days later he kept his vow and became an Augustinian Monk.

“Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that save a wretch like me, I once was lost but now am found was blind but now I see.” (John Newton 1725-1807)

The words of the song Amazing Grace capture the joyousness experienced by Englishman John Newton upon learning of the forgiveness offered to him through Jesus Christ. This forgiveness is the gracious gift of life undeserved by sinners but given on account of God’s love and goodness.

William Tyndale

The Bible… numerous households and hotel rooms in Australia have one… free copies are given out at schools and at train stations, its read in churches and bible study groups the world over… Your Bible… the pages dog-eared, your favourite verses highlighted for later reference… a fairly harmless book right?

Web Watch Wrap #9

I went to a wedding today in the Botanical Gardens. It was nice. But Jesus was missing. While it’s thoroughly appropriate for people to be married who aren’t followers of Jesus, marriage doesn’t make much sense without Him. From the very beginning, marriage has been all about Jesus. Bring on THE Marriage!
