“Our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter.” // FRANCIS CHAN #OXYGEN14

Franic Chan

Oxygen Conference is coming up in August 2014. I’m looking forward to attending and also being part of the Oxygen Press Team. As well as blog posts, I’m hoping to do some interviews and behind the scenes coverage. In the lead up to the conference I will be sharing some of the promo content from the Oxygen team.

This week’s featured speaker is Francis Chan. I’ve admitted before of a mild case of preacher crush for Chan and am looking forward being challenged form the word through his preaching.

Check out some great quotes and videos from Chan.

7 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE PREACHING // FRANCIS CHAN

7 QUESTIONS

Are you a preacher? Below are some really useful questions to ask before each sermon from Francis Chan. They’re also helpful questions to ask for listeners. I’ve been encouraged by his preaching and his character and look forward to hearing him in Australia later this year. Here are my previous Francis Chan posts and here is his official website.

  1. Am I worried about what people think of my message or what God thinks? (Teach with FEAR)
  2. Do I genuinely love these people? (Teach with LOVE)
  3. Am I accurately presenting this passage? (Teach with ACCURACY)
  4. Am I depending on the Holy Spirit’s power or my ow cleverness? (Teach with POWER)
  5. Have I applied this message to my own life? (Teach with INTEGRITY)
  6. Will this message draw attention to me or to God? (Teach with HUMILITY)
  7. Do the people really need this message? (Teach with URGENCY)

Any other questions worth asking?

EDIT: One of my current sponsorsOXYGEN – will be hosting Francis Chan in Sydney during August 2014. Check out all conference website.

FRANCIS CHAN // HOW NOT TO MAKE DISCIPLES

St Faith’s have just begun a series on the book of James. Our small group looked at James 1:19-27 tonight. Verse 22 says, “Do no merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” I showed this 2 minute clip of Francis Chan to illustrate the point:

I don’t think Chan (or James) is saying that it’s not worthwhile studying scripture – the problem is when we study scripture without actually putting it into practise.

Francis Chan – Beyond Expectations

After Francis Chan resigned from his role as the senior pastor of Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley, he spent 3 months travelling around Asia (check this vid for reasons for leaving). I enjoyed reading Lisa’s (his wife) updates during that time. Below is an update from Francis after they arrived back in the USA. My favourite paragraph is in bold.

Update #5 from Francis Chan

Beyond Expectations

It has been an amazing couple of months as you probably saw from Lisa’s updates.  I don’t even know where to start.  Once again, God far exceeded my expectations.  He has a way of doing that…

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us…   Ephesians 3:20

There is far too much to say.  I won’t even attempt to write down all of my thoughts, as that would take too long to read.  I prefer you spend that time in scripture.  So let me just throw out a few thoughts.

GOD is the love of my life.  While I enjoyed experiencing different cultures and meeting new people, I most enjoyed my time communing with God.  It doesn’t matter where I am or what I am doing.  Nothing beats conversing with the living God and watching Him answer prayer.

My family was able to experience exactly what I had hoped and more.  One of my goals as a parent is to show my kids how to live for eternity (Matt. 6:18-20).  I don’t want them to live for the things of this earth.  This was the first time they were able to enjoy not having a home and finding security in Christ.  While I tried to teach that our house was not our home, it is much easier to grasp that concept while homeless.

Think Hard, Stay Humble: The Life of the Mind and the Peril of Pride

I had a mild case of preacher crush watching this sermon the other night. It’s Francis Chan from the Desiring God National Conference 2010. Some really really good stuff. His main text is 1 Corinthians 8:1-3. We need to be those who don’t just think hard about the scriptures, but also think hard about loving people. Chan’s passion for people and particularly for lost people is a rebuke and challenge to me.

Rather than plagiarising some of the content, I might just play it on the big screen at a conference I’m speaking at this week!

EDIT: Here is what I came up with my message “Humble Orthodoxy”

Francis Chan on Persecution in India

The following video is horrific. It shows footage of Christians being persecuted in India. If in doubt, don’t watch it, simply remember and pray for brothers and sisters around the world who are killed for their faith in Jesus. Hear the impact it had on Francis Chan:

Watch a longer (and much more horrific) version of this video
