Free Music Friday 06 // The Window – Fist Fight

A few of the young punks from MBM Youth are part of a killer new band THE WINDOW. They’ve recently released the first song from their upcoming EP, Fist Fight, for free. These young indie rockers liken themselves to The Temper Trap, muse and Deas Vail. My opinion? They’ve got the goods. Seriously. Fist Fight is a catchy tune that wouldn’t be out of place on Triple J. Get it for free from Triple J Unearthed and give them a rating to help them in the Unearthed High school band competition (currently 33 in the charts!).

Counting the cost of discipleship

Luke 9:18-27 is a passage that I regularly preach on. Recently I have been challenged to think through whether I’m willing to put into practise what I’ve been preaching. Check out what Jesus says is non-negotiable for one of his disciples: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (verse 23)

Denying self, taking up cross and following Jesus. Recently I’ve been thinking and praying through where and how to serve Jesus once college has finished. I’ve realised that following Jesus may lead to doing things that would have never even crossed my mind a few years ago.

We’re really starting to count the costs of what this could mean, convinced that whatever we do, following Jesus “demands my soul, my life, my all.”

Probably the highlight of May 2010

This picture Row took of Sam in the clam sand pit thing is probably the highlight of May 2010. I know there’s still another two thirds of May to go, but nothing will top it!

His abilities with a shovel have surpassed mine!

What is your only comfort in life and in death?

I’ve been getting jiggy with the Heidelberg Catechism. It’s a list of 129 questions and answers about God that came into circulation in the Reformed church in 1563. It’s a mediation on 3 main things: The Lord’s Prayer; The Ten Commandments; and the Apostles’ Creed. It is gold. Vintage Doctrine. Kevin DeYoung has just released a book that I’m half way through, The Good News We Almost Forgot. It’s great. Bite-sized chapters. Good for those with short attention spans.

Here’s the first 2 q+a’s in the Catechism:

  1. What is your only comfort in life and in death? – That I am not my own, but belong – body and soul, in life and in death – to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. he has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven: in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to Him, Christ, by His Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for Him
  2. What must you know to live and die in the joy of this comfort? – Three things: first, how great my sin and misery are; seconds, how i am set free from all my sins and misery; third, how i am to thank God for such deliverance.

The other 127 q+a’s then follow this guilt/grace/gratitude structure. Read them all here.

I heart Kirribilli & Petersham

Church By The Bridge and Petersham Evening Church are both running impressive events and corresponding websites aimed directly at their local community using the ‘I heart…’ motif. If you’ve stumbled here via google and you’re from Kirribilli or Petersham, you should check them out. If you’re a Christian involved in loving your community, you should learn from them. They’re both creative as they engage and love their neighbours.

I heart Kirribillithis is an art competition celebrating all there is to love about Kirribilli and their community. Last year was the first year it was run, it’s back this year with a killer website. Check it out.

I heart Petershamthis is a bunch of events during May run by a church known for its creativity. Leigh Hatcher, current anchor on Sky News Australia, is also a Christian and he’s speaking for 3 weeks on ‘The Big Picture’ (the first talk is already online). Leigh is also hosting a ‘Grill the news guy’ event at the local pub. They’re also running a Fair Trade event next week. All great events worth checking out!
