Cross-Centred Youth Ministry – Resources

“In each generation, we are only ever a small step from losing the gospel. Generation 1 preaches the gospel; generation 2 assumes the gospel; generation 3 neglects the gospel; and generation 4 denies the gospel. How do we avoid this potential slippery slope with this current generation? The key to keeping the gospel is keeping the cross of Christ central to all that we do. We preach the cross not just for conversion, but as the daily bread for the Christian. How can we keep the cross central in our youth ministries? Do our ministries actually reflect the cross?”

Above is the blurb for my second elective yesterday arvo at NYMC… again you might need to ask someone who attended if it lived up to expectation! I’m pretty passionate about keeping the cross central in life and ministry. I really hope that people were encouraged to keep the main thing the main thing.

Talks will be available for download from the NYMC website.

Help young punks to read the Bible

Here’s a youth ministry idea: help young punks to read the Bible. That’s one of the goals behind our DAILY BIBLE JOURNAL. For these school holidays we’re encouraging our crew to read through some of the Psalms.

I was going to have a crack at writing some school holiday reading notes, but in the end thought I’d use a brilliant new resource from Matt Jacobs. It’s a project called SixtySixBooks. Basically it provides an intro to different books of the Bible in a way that youth can understand along with a sample reading plan.

We’re using Graham Stanton’s notes on the Psalms.

What strategies do you use to help young people dig into God’s word?

The Incomparable God gives strength to the weary

On Sunday night we had a special year 12 church service. It was encouraging to be able to pray for them and preach to them. I spoke from Isaiah 40 encouraging people to lift up their eyes to see the Incomparable God who offers strength to those who put their hope in him.

Here’s a link to the mp3. I hope it’s helpful for those who need a bigger picture perspective.

Get Fit for Summer… or Eternity

Summer is coming. It’s time to get fit and healthy! But eternity is also coming. Physical training is of some value, but it’s got nothing on training in godliness. Godliness will prepare you for eternity. Here is a sermon I recently preached on godliness from 1 Timothy 4:4-16…

TRAINING IN GODLINESS – Dave Miers mp3 (right click to download etc)

Structure:

ARE YOU READY FOR ETERNITY?
1) GODLINESS HAS VALUE FOR ALL THINGS
2) DELIBERATE TRAINING IN GODLINESS
3) EXAMPLES OF GODLINESS
4) THE PRIORITY OF THE WORD OF GOD
INVEST IN ETERNITY.
