Avatar is FernGully

Last night, Row and I went to the movies for the first time since Samuel was born. It was good fun. We got to wear these crazy 3D glasses while watching Avatar. I really enjoyed it, visually quite spectacular. As we left the cinema Row’s assessment was that it was just a more sexied up version of the 1992 Australian movie, FernGully: The Last Rainforest. Check out this mash-up: Avatar trailer audio, with snippets from FernGully.

And then it dawned on me, I turn 30 this year!

Not long after the rocket-clock tick-tocked past midnight to begin 2010, it dawned on me, I turn 30 this year! During 2009, I had moments of anxiety knowing that ‘next year’ I turn 30. ‘Next year’ is now ‘this year’. ‘This year’ is pretty much the end of life as I know it. Some have called this a quarter-life crisis. Row laughed when I suggested this. She said “what, you think you’re going to live to 120 years old?!?!”

She has a point. But just like a mid-life crisis is normally after the half-way mark, 30 is a mathematically valid time to be having a quarter-life crisis. I really respect the bible college that I attend, in fact I quite like it and see the benefit of being there. But sometimes, I feel a bit like Billy Madison. I know there are serial students, but they normally have a PHD by my age. I’m just doing another Bachelor’s degree, I don’t have a full-time job, I have about 50 casual jobs. I kinda feel like I’m waiting to get on with life.

Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead

“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:12-14)

Farewell 2009. Bring on 2010!!! Have a killer new year “pressing on toward the goal…”

Best of 2009 – Top 5 iPhone Apps

Best of 2009 round 1:  Albums. Round 2: iPhone Apps. I’ve had an iPhone for about 4 months. It really has been a handy productivity tool, and it also makes phone calls! The following are Applications that I use most days.

  1. Trip View Lite super smart and super useful train (and bus + ferry) timetable. The paid version enables you to save your favourite trips. Triperrific.
  2. Dictionary.com the best thing about this app is that you don’t need to be connected to the internet to use it. Also has a thesaurus. Wordelicious.
  3. Cash Trails we enter spending into this app and then email it weekly as a spreadsheet. Good for keeping an eye on spending and budgeting. Cashtastic.
  4. Ultimate To Do there are a billion ‘to-do’ apps. This one syncs with toodledo and follows the principles from David Allen and the GTD cult system. Just do it.
  5. ABC News + Media good up-to-date news and other media from different ABC websites. ABC are leading the way in Oz in embracing new media. Sexy news.

Got an iPhone? What’s your #1 app??

Twilight #1 – Team Edward or Team Jacob?

Guest Blogger: Row Miers

As part of the recent “Twilight Saga” journey that I and a number of my friends have embarked on, a topic that has been hotly debated is which team we are on: Team Edward or Team Jacob? Which guy is Bella Swan best suited to?

On the one hand there’s the vampire Edward Cullen, with his smouldering good looks, super human strength, excessive wealth, intelligence, good manners and old fashioned values and his unfathomable love, commitment and protectiveness of his soul mate Bella Swan. Then there’s the alternative, the werewolf Jacob Black, with his powerful and muscular physique, selfless courage, fun-loving disposition, and his enduring patience and loyalty towards Bella.

The argument could go on. A further question that I feel is also up for discussion is, what has Team Bella got going for it? From the books it clear that she has many good qualities: she is generally thought of as being quite physically attractive; she seems to always do her homework; she keeps on top of the cooking and cleaning around the house; she’s keenly aware of caring for the needs of her mother and father and showing due respect to them; she doesn’t speed; and she’s fun and adventurous.
