Freedom from Sin and Death

In a world where many are crying out for freedom and liberation, Good Friday is a message of freedom: “God brings freedom from sin and death through the death of Jesus for sin.” I preached from Matthew 27 across the day. Always encouraged by the older crew at 830. Good time with my family at 1030. And then a new Good Friday Night service and dinner at 6pm tonight. I’m thankful to God for time with our church family today.

Here’s some details from tonight: there were 3 Bible readings, Isa 53 and 2 from Matthew 27, each with live music backing. The above pic from creation swap was used as a background. The band played 5 songs: Nothing but the blood; How deep the Father’s Love; In Christ Alone; Jesus Thank You; and Stronger. They also did a great version of Lead me to the Cross as an item (here’s a short vid). We used a countdown video to kick off and another video off the back of the sermon.

The Harsh Reality of Hell

The past week has seen a lot of discussion about hell on Christian blogs. Rob Bell, of the Nooma video fame, has a book coming out at the end of March called Love Wins. Justin Taylor, in response to the blurb from the publisher and the promo video from Bell, asks whether this book will show Bell to be a universalist. Universalism is the belief that in the end all people will be saved and – if there is a hell – it will be empty. Critics of Taylor say that he can’t make a call on the book before it has even been released! Yet I think that Kevin DeYoung makes a good case for Taylor’s initial response. // Read more from Tim Challies.

I don’t know what Rob Bell believes about hell. I pray that he isn’t a universalist.

This week I’ve been thinking about the harsh reality of hell. I believe that hell exists because I trust what Jesus says is true. We’re currently studying Matthew 8-12 at church. It’s shocking to see how often Jesus mentions hell in Matthew’s Gospel.

This weekend I preached on Matthew 10:24-42. Check out this verse:

The Jesus Revolution – New Zealand Style

Last week I spoke on the Summer Youth Camp of the Grace Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. It’s a young denomination and involved in valuable work across both Islands. Lots of fun. Great food. Dedicated leaders. Beautiful weather. I preached on ‘The Jesus Revolution’, a series I’ve done many times, but this time added 3 new talks. The talks went well. I was really encouraged by the young kiwi’s and their hunger to spend time in the Word and God was very kind in the way he worked during the week. During talk 5 there were many who responded to the good news of Jesus, such a joyful night!

Here are the mp3s from the 8 talks (right click to download):

Enjoy.

The Good Shepherd + Humble Orthodoxy

We’re currently on holidays on the South Island of New Zealand. We’ve seen more sheep than people. Below are some local sheep posing for the camera. While on the subject of sheep, I recently spoke on the Youthworks YMC – Some to be Shepherds. I gave the opening and closing talks. The first one was on John 10 – I think it was a good place to kick off the conference reflecting on Jesus the Good Shepherd. The final talk was on Humble Orthodoxy – which is all about speaking the truth without being a jerk.

Here are the mp3s for both talks:

Don’t Waste Your Life – Vanuatu 2010 Talk MP3s

Each day on Scripture Union Schoolies in Vanuatu 2010, I lead the team through some studies in Ephesians. The big question we thought through concerned what to do with the rest of your life. Having just finished 13 years of schooling, it was perfect timing to urge the 25 fantastic schoolies to not waste their lives. The encouragement from Ephesians is to live a life on purpose bringing glory and honour to Jesus in all things.

Here are the MP3s from each talk (right click to download):

If you were on Vanuatu and happened to fall asleep in any of my talks… go crazy with these bad boys on your iPod! Peaceout.

MP3s from Regenerate Spring Camp 2010

Are you involved in youth ministry? Keen to see a great youth ministry in action? Try and spend some time with Regenerate Youth from Christ Church Gladesville, such an encouraging bunch of young punks. Exciting stuff happening in their community. I gave 5 talks from Luke’s gospel on following Jesus at their recent Spring Camp. Sweet.
