#SNIPPETY

I’m considering doing these #snippety posts a little more often. But keen to gauge how useful they are. Not as many people click through to them, but I think it has the potential to be useful. So if you are a regular reader of this blog, a friend who has happened to click through this time or someone random who got here looking for pictures of cats… What do you think of a regular blog post like this with a variety of snippets from around the web with links to read the whole article? Feel free to leave a comment or contact me with any thoughts.

My pick of the links below is the first one. I have blogged a bunch of times on homosexuality and also linked out to relevant articles in these #snippety posts. Not because it’s my hobby horse, but because it’s an active issue that I am working out how to help young people navigate. Christians don’t believe that homosexuality is any worse than any other sin. But the article makes the point that it is an active issue in the way that it is being “celebrated by our larger society with pioneering excitement”. There are typically two camps in the debate, those who celebrate it and those who hate it. The author wants to suggest that Christians have the opportunity to say you’re wrong but you’re loved. i.e. Being able to disagree without being a jerk. Anyway, have a read and let me know what you think!

See below for the snips:

Why Homosexuality Is Not Like Other Sins

It’s not the only sin mentioned, but it is different from all the rest, at least right now. At this moment in history, contrary to the other sins listed here, homosexuality is celebrated by our larger society with pioneering excitement. It’s seen as a good thing, as the new hallmark of progress.

A DEMOGRAPHIC SNAPSHOT OF CHRISTIANITY AND CHURCH ATTENDERS IN AUSTRALIA

National Church Life Survey (NCLS) data shows that over the last four decades the proportion of Australians attending church at least once per month has more than halved from 36% (1972) to 15% currently. However this is still a significant proportion of the Australian population and indeed twice as many Australians attend church at least once per month (3.495m) as attend all AFL, NRL, A League and Super Rugby games combined per month (1.684m) during the football season.

Greed is the market’s forgotten vice

Greed has always been with us, and insatiability isn’t unique to modern Western civilisation, but we’re certainly giving it a workout. To us, money is the simplest measure of whether you’re winning at the game of life.

The danger of the monster myth

One of the most disturbing moments of the past 18 months of my life was hearing my wife’s killer form a coherent sentence in court.

Royals attend child-friendly Easter Day

Once inside, at the couple’s request, they saw not a special Royal service, but a regular Easter Sunday celebration complete with babies going into and out of the crying room, the Sunday school performing songwriter Colin Buchanan’s ‘He died upon the cross’ and a dramatic reading by members of the St Andrew’s Youth group.
